An alternative I could think of is gmailctl[1]

- I write procmail rules that forward chosen mails to gmail with +<folder>
  tag

- I write a tool to convert the procmail spec to gmail rules that convert
tags to label names and upload these rules using gmailctl.

- So procmail remains my sole email classification spec. I cannot avoid
gmail rules, but I mechanize their maintenance.
