Create an entry like this in /usr/share/misc/keycap.pcvt

bs|Use a real backspace:\
 :K14=\008:

and add:

 kcon -m bs

in rc.local.

(Disclaimer: I don't have an i386 offhand to test this right now, so
it may need a little adjustment to actually work).
