Stupid mistake.  Somehow the Toshiba had reverted back to IRQ 7 for
the on-board soundblaster clone.  Switching it away to IRQ 5 (where
it was before!) did the trick.

I wonder why the pcmcia driver decided to allocate an in-use IRQ.
