I suspected some weird HW failure, but rolling back the machine to a

FWIW, the older kernel has

mainbus0 (root)
cpu0 at mainbus0 apid 0: Intel 686-class, 2992MHz, id 0xf33
cpu1 at mainbus0 apid 1: Intel 686-class, 2992MHz, id 0xf33

where the new one has a whizzing

mainbus0 (root)
cpu0 at mainbus0 apid 0: Intel 686-class, 8379MHz, id 0xf33
cpu1 at mainbus0 apid 1: Intel 686-class, 8379MHz, id 0xf33

Does that come in a quad-core model? Wow - 8.4GHz
