it showed everything where I thought it should be.

Turns out that this IPX just doesn't like the CD-R at SCSI ID 1 and the
hard drive at ID 3.  Changing the CD-R to 4 makes it happy.  Now I just
need to do some shuffling around to get everything reconnected.
