Other than ssh/gpg sorts of things, I have not noticed any speed
changes.   But I have not tried to do real measurements on things the
kernel would matter for.  I suspect it isn't a big deal, but thought I
might as well have code optimized for the processor I had.

If your kernel were smaller than mine (3.3M was trouble), you might
not overflow the limit.
