Because in that case, every status change involves regenerating the checksum of the patch, which I don't really like. For example, pbulk rebuilds a package whenever a CVS Id of a file in PKGPATH has changed. It would be easy to list patches/status as an exception. Listing the patches themselves would not be good. :)
