Maybe start with the $5B subsidy to Tesla and $20B to big oil

Where do you come up with stuff like this? Trump just cut payments for EV charging stations, and Musk is against government handouts.
byFalconhell ( 1289630 ) writes:
Musk happily gobbled up govt EV subsidies, he just doesnt like anyone else getting subsidies.

IIRC Tesla is only profitable because they sell those energy credit mandates to other car companies.
The man is literally wealthy on corporate welfare, as I understand the flow.
I would put the rocket company more in the subsidy than welfare category, though taxpayers fund their R&D costs.

1 - Other EV manufacturers get the same subsidies, and Musk has requested that all subsidies be eliminated.
2 - Tesla generates far more tax revenue for the government than it receives in subsidies.
3 - It isn’t by chance that it has the best selling EVs worldwide.

4 - SpaceX charges 80% less than the competition, which is arguably far more heavily subsidized.

Had the best selling EV's in the world. While he did good having the first mover advantage, that's gone, he's sat on his ass instead of innovating and tariffs are coming for his business as part of Trumps plan to increase the cost of living.

1 - Tesla didn’t get to where it is today by accident. It wasn’t even close to a “first mover” in the EV field. Your theory is obviously bunk.
2 - The Model Y is undeniably the world’s top selling EV today, and has been since 2023.
Other companies are finally catching up, but most of them are losing money hand over fist in the process.

And this shows BYD now the top selling EV, https://www.statista.com/stati... [statista.com]

Red herring much? You didn’t disprove either of my points. The Model Y is indeed still undeniably the best selling pure EV. And don’t forget that BYD overall sales numbers have long conflated hybrid with pure EV numbers. A plug-in hybrid isn’t the same thing as a pure EV.
All you did with those other articles is point out the trend that that other companies are slowly catching up. It’s rather amazing that Tesla is doing so well worldwide given that most other major EV manufacturers ar

I keep reading articles where Tesla's sales are dropping lately, mostly on my phone. Those were just the first couple of hits on my desktop. The people who are likely to buy electric are pissed of at Musk and the ones who like Musk like buying big ICE vehicles.

You obviously very deliberately sidestepped important context.
Great job! /s
The ends justify the means, eh?
bydryeo ( 100693 ) writes:
My context has been that lately Tesla's sales are dropping fast in much of the world. Where it'll be next year, I guess depends on Trump and Xi and if they make peace.
byWheres the kaboom ( 10344974 ) writes:
I think it’s a fair to point out that Tesla has flatlined recently, but not fair to ignore the contributing factors and past performance, and not fair to pretend it still isn’t a strong leader overall.
As for Trump and Xi, that’s not the biggest factor. Tesla, so far, has managed to effectively navigate national and international politics. It did well with Trump 1, Obama, and Biden. And has done well with Xi. It particularly dominates Swedish markets despite Swedish union opposition. Etc. E

No, Tesla hasn't been only profitable due to energy credits. Early on, that was true, and they're still significant for padding the margins, but Tesla would be fine without them. Now if you add in consumer incentives that vary by jurisdiction (e.g., the $7500 federal tax credit), those don't go to Tesla, so it's impossible to determine exactly how much sales would drop without those, and how much Tesla would drop prices to regain those sales. And if oil subsidies were also eliminated, it's unclear what t
