Is there really any reason we can't just make pennies out of plastic instead? Personally, I haven't used cash in ages anyway so I'm really neither here nor there on running out of pennies, but it seems like if the problem is just that they cost too much to manufacture, make them out of something cheaper.

Among other things, Americans considently dump $1 coins in drawers and don't circulate them; the treasury could stop minting them, and the only people who would notice, would be the people who get a new one every year and maintain a collection sorted by date. Whereas, if they stopped printing $1 bills, there would be torches an
