The OWL 2 Web Ontology Language, informally OWL 2, is an ontology language for the Semantic Web that became a W3C Recommendation on Oct 27 2009. OWL 2 is compatible with the OWL standard of 2004 (now referred to as "OWL 1") which it supersedes. Like in OWL 1, the main syntactic form of OWL 2 ontologies is based on an RDF serialization, although various alternative syntactic forms are available too.
A detailed introduction for users of the standard is given in the OWL 2 Primer. In a nutshell, OWL 2 ontology documents describe information in terms of classes, properties, individuals, and data values the relationships of which can be described by a number of features. Ontologies are stored as machine readable documents that can be based on a number of official syntactic variants. OWL 2 ontologies can be used along with information written in RDF, and OWL 2 ontologies themselves are primarily exchanged as RDF documents. OWL 2 is a compatible of the prior OWL 1 ontology language.
