Your lack of understanding shows why you are probably surprised every time something bad happens to you. So, here's some basic stuff that doesn't even go into a lot of depth...
First up, you have to understand that individual weather systems are due to various factors, from water temperatures, to how different weather patterns interact. Basic stuff like warm air rises, cold air sinks, but then, what happens when you have an entrenched cold weather system and a warm weather system that isn't as powerful moves OVER it...yep, you get SNOW, not rain, but snow, even though the precipitation up in the atmosphere may start as rain.
So, you have all of these systems moving, and interacting with each other, you have what is called the Polar Vortex and how strong or weak it is. You can still have overall warmer weather, but then EVENTS where you get several weeks or even months of unusually cold weather. How things interact with each other is what you don't understand. Over the past 20-30 years, people talk about cold patterns in the winter, downplay or say that global warming and climate change are a hoax, and then, you get hot summer weather that is the worst on record, and suddenly people forget about their claims during the winter.
Trend lines...not individual data points, but looking at the tends is used by people who have a clue, because you NEVER see long-term patterns if all you do is look at individual temperatures from day to day.
