Dell Computer added a new server on Tuesday to its low-cost PowerEdge SC
family, which is designed to provide small businesses with a "true" server to
handle basic server tasks, instead of a modified desktop PC.
The Dell PowerEdge 500SC is the company's first product designed
specifically to be a one-processor server, and will be offered with a 1-GHz
Pentium III processor or an 800-MHz Celeron processor. An entry-level version
of the 500SC starts at $699 and is available immediately, a Dell spokesperson
says.
Small-business users can currently buy an entry-level version of the
Dell 300SC server with a single 850-MHz Pentium III processor for $649,
including a $100 discount, according to information on Dell's
Web site.

Dell officials say smaller companies have been asking for a single-chip
server for basic file, print, and e-mail serving. Many users accomplish these
tasks by modifying a desktop PC.
Dell hopes the relatively low price for the entry-level system combined
with certain server-specific technologies--which include support for up to 2GB
of memory and 180GB of storage--will make the product attractive to users.
