My Wired News Wishes for 2004
My wishlist for 2004, as proposed to Michelle Delio of Wired News. The article also has wishes from a dozen other folks, with a bit of leaning towards security/privacy activists.

A Year Spilling Over With New Communications Technologies
Layperson's guide to competition and regulation in new communications media (802.11, 802.16, VoIP, etc.).

OO versus XML + agile programming languages?
Kimbro Staken skewers a terribly contrived example of OO-to-the-max. It's great fun at first glance, but in the end I find the treatment somewhat troubling.

Turf Battle: Dock vs. Menu Bar
Will Apple learn to love the dock again only when they've run out of space on the menu bar?

Seven Technologies to Take to War
I had to go to Iraq for a year. I could only take a couple of things, and this is what I chose.

The Big Chill message: Give up, Buy in, Get rich
The big story in the media today is the twentieth anniversary of the release of the movie The Big Chill. That film was supremely exploitative and alienating even for a film industry totally characterized by those traits. To the fortunate few, the 1960s was only a moment within a long chain of activism.

Technologies I'm interested in: 2004 Edition
Last year, a bunch of the O'Reilly webloggers made predictions. This year, instead, Steve Mallet has a better idea: talk about "what are you going to work on during the coming year."

Every App Has Its Day
In SF I'd like to see attention turned to iPhoto, iMovie, and iCal. iTunes is already at v4, but iCal is v1, iPhoto v2 and iMovie v3. It's time to shine a light on them.

IT spending focusing on "strategic" and "enterprise" software
I came across this AP article recently. If the predictions are true, then that rings good news for many of us in the enterprise integration and infrastructure enablement business...

The revival of the look-and-feel lawsuit?
Had the look-and-feel lawsuits of the 1980s succeeded, there could be no OpenOffice today with its cloning of Microsoft keystrokes and other behaviors. This time, it's SCO claiming that Linux is infringing on its copyright.

SharedTrips - a travel planning service
Imagine a web service/site that enhances the travel experience by improving trip research and planning, finding people to travel with, people to connect with at your travel destination, and enabling you to keep loved ones apprised of travels during a trip via mobile camera phones. This blog does just that.

What does 2004 hold for you?
I'm one of those people who love the idea of new beginnings and resetting a straight course for the new year. I'm curious.... what are you going to work on during the coming year?

iTunes Essentials for Road Trips
Preparing for a road trip includes more than making sure the house plants are watered -- my iPod needs to be charged and sporting a few new tracks. Is Essentials the answer?

Rudolph has a girlfriend?
The case against extending copyrights has been made, clearly and eloquently, by numerous people. The idea of the creative commons, of building on the artistic works of prior generations and thereby creating an ever more grand and rich cultural infrastructure, is a compelling vision. But, somehow, around the edges, things feel a little bit dodgy. Should the people at blog.santa.com be allowed to put "Santa's weblog" on the web? And should they be allowed to fill it with product placements?
