Battle of the Displays: CRT vs. LCD in Displays
Contributed by Katharine Miller

2004-03-24

DisplaysLast year, I made the conversion to flat panel LCD after spending seven years with my first (and only) CRT monitor. It was beginning to show the signs of age. The delightful stickers I put on it six years ago were peeling and fading, the screen would turn pink for brief flashes, and the display started to pulsate. For someone who spends upwards of 16-hours a day in front of the computer, these conditions were unsatisfactory. However, it was not without a little sadness that I made the inevitable switch. Sure, I could’ve invested in a larger CRT display for less money, but my desk (and my arms, which would be hauling it up a flight of stairs) was hoping for something a bit lighter. But I’m just a silly, sentimental girl.  Discuss this Article!

Evercool PCAC in Cooling

CoolingThis week Dev Hardware had the opportunity to review a unique new cooling product from Evercool, the Personal Computer's Air Conditioner (PCAC). The PCAC is variable turbine fan assembly, moving up to 100 cubic feet of air per minute. The PCAC is actually an exhaust fan, intended to push air out of your case, through a 5.25" bay where the device is mounted. There has been very little coverage of this product since its January release, so I am excited to see if this unique design has what it takes to find a niche in the enthusiast cooling market.   Discuss this Article!

Let the Seller Beware Promotions Will be Hacked in Opinions

Opinions

It's nothing new: we see promotions all the time which plead with us to『look under the winning bottle cap.』Unfortunately, the soda companies' unwillingness to add that extra half ounce of over-priced carbonated liquid often throws the promotion statistics out the window. In the age of the Internet, this means that if a promotion can be hacked, it will. Find out how Pepsi and Apple managed to keep a few promo-hackers' hard drives filled with free MP3s--and what CueCat has to do with all of this.  Discuss this Article!

USB: Universally Altering Your Peripherals in Peripherals

PeripheralsUSB allows even the most basic user to plug in new peripherals without taking a screwdriver to the computer case. As more developers have realized the potential and power of the USB, we’ve seen the number of Plug and Play devices expand. In 1999, there were more than 100 USB compatible products on the market. By now there are hundreds of USB compatible devices in each category ranging from keyboards and mice to digital cameras and scanners. And, of course, you can’t introduce a new source of connectivity and not expect some silliness to arise from it. Over the course of the past year or so, about a dozen USB peripheral novelties have popped into the market. Some have logical and reasonable uses where others are just for giggles.  Discuss this Article!

SoftwareRecently, Microsoft released the preview version of its new Windows XP 64 for AMD 64 systems. If that's you, should you be seriously considering upgrading to this version of Windows? Find out what advantages--if any--you are to gain by moving to this beta-version operating system (OS).  Discuss this Article!

GamesWhile some kids enjoy playing backyard football with their neighborhood friends on Friday afternoons, others like to hang out and watch TV, go out and watch a movie, or sit at home and play videogames. In fact, many teens do all these things. The media has often given the impression that violent content sells games. Similarly, a certain niche of the video game industry has recognized that many gamers want violence. But where does one draw the line between acceptable and harmful video game violence?  Discuss this Article!

Radeon 9600XT by ASUS Review in Video Cards

Video CardsBack in the old days of 700 MHz Athlons, the name Asus always brought out the same response: they make superb motherboards that can't be beat. They still have that reputation with the newer motherboards, especially the  P4P800  and the P4P800 Deluxe. Their video cards I had never heard of, so I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into Canada Computers and saw an ASUS Radeon 9600XT/TVD for under $300. It looked like a good midrange videocard, and it was based on a Radeon 9600 VPU which had sold out everywhere, so I was left asking "Am I getting a great deal or is this card a piece of garbage?" Or better yet, "should I pay the extra cash for a 9800XT?"  Discuss this Article!

Elite Bastards has compiled NV40 and R420/423 information into a sort of "FAQ" laying out everything they know about the chipsets.

"Here at Elite Bastards, we don't profess to know any more than the rest of you when it comes to what these new boards will offer - However, as we've been keeping a very close eye on all the information flying around the Internet in recent weeks or months, now seems like as good a time as any to try and compile that information and attempt to make some sense of what we've heard so far. So, without further ado, let's try to assimilate what we know about the two high-end parts expected to be launched by ATi and nVidia into a kind of FAQ of what we know so far."

Samsung CLP-500 @ Trusted Reviews

"We found the CLP-500 quick and easy to unpack and set up, although there is a surprising amount of assembly work required. Once we had unpacked the box we had to insert the four toner trays in the left hand side, and then drop the imaging unit and transfer belt in the top of the printer."
