 A '''bovid hybrid''' is the [[Hybrid (biology)|hybrid]] offspring of members of two different species of the [[bovid]] family. There are 143 extant species of bovid, and the widespread domestication of several species has led to an interest in hybridisation for the purpose of encouraging traits useful to humans, and to preserve declining populations. Bovid hybrids may occur naturally through undirected interbreeding, traditional pastoral practices, or may be the result of modern interventions, sometimes bringing together species from different parts of the world.
+Some examples of such hybrids include the American bison (Bison bison) and European bison (Bison bonasus) being hybridized with domestic cattle (Bos taurus), as well as hybrids between zebu and other Bos species. In addition, hybrids between domestic cattle and yaks exist in countries such as India, Nepal, Tibet, and Mongolia. Bison hybrids also exist between bison species and subspecies, like the American bison and European wisent. Furthermore, water buffalo and domestic cattle hybrids have been unsuccessful in laboratory experiments. Genetic testing is being conducted on public and private herds to identify and potentially cull animals with bovine DNA, with the goal of preserving pure bison herds.
