==History==
The Festival unofficially began in 1924 as a Coast Guard personnel only picnic when the local Coast Guard station held rowing competitions for those service members stationed in Grand Haven. The first festival began in 1937.<ref name="coastguardfest"/> In August 1971 it was officially recognized as Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival, Inc. as a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Grand Haven was named "Coast Guard City, USA" by an Act of Congress and signed by the President of the United States on November 13, 1998.<ref>http://www.hollandsentineal.com/x-17104-Holland-Family-Examiner~y2009m7d21-Coast-Guard-Festival-Grand-Haven-MI-2009{{dead link|date=August 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref>

The event was cancelled from 1942 to 1945 because of [[World War II]] & 2020 as the [[COVID-19 pandemic]] was to blame.
