During the [[Siege of Paris (1870–71)|Siege of Paris]] in 1870, elephant meat was consumed, due to a severe shortage of food. Along with other animals at the zoo Jardin des Plantes in Paris, both [[Castor and Pollux (elephants)|Castor and Pollux]] were killed and eaten.
