No mention of 1964 tsunami

edit

In 1964 a tsunami with 35 foot waves wiped out Kodiak's business district. http://www.kodiak.org/earthquake.html and Michael Palin's Full Circle (1997). This would seem to be worth mentioning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.89.192.125 (talk) 23:17, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Coast Guard

edit

This page needs a section on the Coast Guard station, preferably its history and present population and duties. NancyHeise talk 02:01, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

City vs community

edit

The jet airport is not in the city, Sampson Tug & Barge is not in the city, there is ferry service directly from Port Lions to Homer, therefore not all of the shipping to the island goes through the city. Most of the community lives outside the city limits. Good demographics are available at http://www.zipskinny.com for 99615. This gives the true picture about population of the COMMUNITY and not just what is within the CITY, but this article is about the CITY. I'm one of those who lives just north of the city. I have a nice military history at http://www.kadiak.org which also has a page or two about the 1964 tsunami. Wl7aml (talk) 08:05, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for helping! I agree that the page needs to be improved. I want to work on this as I have time. NancyHeise talk 05:25, 23 October 2009 (UTC) (in response to original post by Wl7aml (talk) 02:59, 15 August 2009 (UTC))Reply
This is an ongoing problem. Articles tend to be built on editors' perceptions of what the city is, which more often than not is based on a zip code coverage area than on corporate limits. The community articles on Wikipedia were for the most part mass-created by a bot, and as such were organized along city/CDP lines. Otherwise, this article would have been titled "ZIP code 99615". Kodiak is one of four major anomalies in the city/CDP dynamic in Alaska, the others being Ketchikan, Palmer and Wasilla. In these cases, there is a significant populated area directly outside city limits, yet is not included within a census-designated place. In the specific case of Kodiak, I assume we're talking about the neighborhoods east of downtown and Mill Bay Road and stretching north toward Fort Abercrombie, as well as part of the highway between town and the airport. Unless this area can be established as a separate unincorporated community or communities through reliable sources, it makes no sense to not mention them as a part of Kodiak. All that's needed is to discern what is and isn't within city limits when that distinction is important. RadioKAOS  – Talk to me, Billy 11:48, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

There are 7 communities on Kodiak, not 6

edit

In addition to the city of Kodiak, there are 6 villages on the island (Ahkiok, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, Port Lions and Karluk). —Preceding unsigned comment added by TaleofGenji (talkcontribs) 04:13, 9 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ouzinkie is on Spruce Island not Kodiak Island. It is, however, within the borough. Wl7aml (talk) 00:28, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions

edit

"Rusty Tusty"

edit

Having grown up in Kodiak, I've never heard the term "Rusty Tusty". Nor have my friends or girlfriend (who were also raised in Kodiak). This may represent a small demographic. Anyway, if it can be cited, fine, but we don't want to use an encyclopedia to invent terminology. I'm removing it for now. Xurtio (talk) 21:05, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

M/V Tustumena is known as both Rusty Tusty and Trusty Tusty. I work at the Kodiak ferry terminal. Wl7aml (talk) 00:34, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fort Abercrombie

edit

A historical site. Some pictures and a section on it would be nice. Xurtio (talk) 21:08, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's not in the City of Kodiak which is the title of this article. However, http://www.kadiak.org has quite a bit about Ft. Abercrombie. Wl7aml (talk) 07:59, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Notable people

edit

Some notable people from Kodiak and a few who notably passed through, if anyone has time:
