There are currently 225 Protected Natural AreasinMexico, covering 93.8 million hectares in total. They are protected and administered by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, or 'CONANP'), a federal agency.[1] CONANP administers:

  • 48biosphere reserves
  • 54flora and fauna protection areas
  • 28Mexican Nature Sanctuaries
  • 13natural resources protection areas
  • 5natural monuments
  • Bonampak is an ancient Maya archaeological site in the Mexican stateofChiapas, and is a natural monument.
