Qaem Shahr (Persian: قائم‌شهر; pronunciation)[a] is a city in the Central DistrictofQaem Shahr County, Mazandaran province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[5] Originally known as Aliyabad, the name Ŝâhi (Shahi) was used until the Iranian Revolution in 1979 when the city acquired its current name.[citation needed]

In 1951, Qaem Shahr's population was around 18,000, growing to 123,684 in 1991.[citation needed] At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 174,246 in 48,055 households.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 196,050 people in 60,347 households.[7] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 204,953 people in 68,407 households.[3]

The city is 228 kilometres (142 mi) northeast of Tehran via road 79 which passes through Shirgah, Pol-e Sefid and Firuzkuh. It is also 19 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Babol; and 23 kilometres (14 mi) southwest of Sari, the capital of the province, connected to both by road 22.[8]

Qaem Shahr is where the North Iranian railway quits the fertile plains of Mazandaran to cross the highest mountain range of the Middle East, the Alborz.
