On June 1, 2022, a gunman shot and killed four people at the Natalie Building, part of the Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[1][2][3] The shooting was the 233rd mass shooting in the United States in 2022 and occurred eight days after the Robb Elementary School shootinginUvalde, Texas.[4][5]

Shooting

The shooting is reported to have occurred on the building's second floor, in the orthopedic facility, with the victims being both staff and patients.[6] Law enforcement received a call of a person with a firearm in the Natalie Medical Building on Saint Francis Hospital campus, at around 4:56pm.[7] Responding officers to the scene heard shots in the building and moved toward the 2nd floor of the building, where they found the perpetrator dead.[4]

The Tulsa Police Department confirmed just before 5:00 PM CDT that the shooter was killed by what they believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.[8][9][3]The Tulsa Police Department notified the Muskogee Police Department that a bomb may have been placed in a residential area in Muskogee.[10]

Victims

Four people were killed and fewer than 10 others were injured in the shooting.[4]

The victims were not immediately identified by both the media or the hospital system. The Saint Francis Health System, which operates the hospital, released a statement on June 1, explaining its decision to not name the victims out of respect for the families.[7]

The names of the victims were reported as Dr. Preston Philips, Dr. Stephanie Husen, Amanda Green, and William Love.[11] According to reports, two victims were doctors, one was a receptionist for the office, and one was a patient.[12]

Perpetrator

The perpetrator was described by police as a black male believed to be between the ages of 35 and 40, armed with a rifle and handgun.[6][13][14] The weapons that were recovered at the scene were later identified as an AR-15-style firearm, and a semiautomatic pistol, which were reportedly purchased on June 1 and May 29 respectively.[4]

The Chief of the Tulsa Police Department, Wendell Franklin, said on June 2 that the perpetrator had undergone back surgery with Dr. Philips and had suffered from pain since the operation. A letter, which officials said was found on the perpetrator, said that, while Philips was the target of the shooting, others would be killed "who got in his way."[15]

Responses

Governor Kevin Stitt called the shooting "a senseless act of violence and hatred."[10] Tulsa Mayor G. T. Bynum expressed "profound gratitude" for the "broad range of first responders who did not hesitate today to respond to this act of violence."[16]

Captain Richard Meulenberg of the Tulsa Police Department described the attack as deliberate, saying, “It wasn’t random,” and that “This wasn’t an individual who just decided he wanted to go find a hospital full of random people. He deliberately made a choice to come here and his actions were deliberate.”[17][18]
