The Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) is a region-wide forum for interaction among scholars and practitioners of public and private international law either based in or interested in Asia.[1]
It was formally established in April 2007 at an inaugural meeting at the National University of Singapore attended by, among others, then-President of the International Court of Justice Dame Rosalyn Higgins and Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo.[2][3]
The Society is an international non-partisan, non-profit, and non-governmental organization with the following objectives:
The first President of the Society was OWADA Hisashi, current President of the International Court of Justice.[5] The current President of the Society is Judge XUE Hanqin, also a member of the International Court of Justice and until 2010 China's Ambassador to ASEAN and Member of the International Law Commission.[6]
The Society has launched a new Asian Journal of International Law, which is published by Cambridge University Press beginning in 2011.[7]
