Macha Gharibian is a French-Armenian pianist, singer, and composer known for her unique blend of jazz, world, and folk music. Born into a musical family in Paris, her father, Dan Gharibian, is a renowned musician known for founding the group Bratsch. Macha's music is deeply influenced by her multicultural background and her extensive musical education in classical piano and jazz.

Early Life and Education

Macha Gharibian was born in Paris, France, into a musical family. Her father, Dan Gharibian, is a renowned musician known for founding the group Bratsch. Growing up in this environment, she was exposed to music from an early age. She began her classical piano training in Paris and, in 2005, moved to New York to immerse herself in the jazz and improvisational music scene. In New York, she studied under notable musicians such as Ralph Alessi, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane, Craig Taborn, and Uri Caine. This experience allowed her to bridge the gap between classical music and jazz, and she began to compose her own music during this time.[1]

Career

Gharibian's career is a blend of multiple musical influences, reflecting her Armenian heritage, Parisian upbringing, and experiences in New York. She debuted with her album Mars in 2013, followed by Trans Extended in 2016, and Joy Ascension in 2020. Her music is characterized by a mix of oriental jazz, neo-classical, and adventurous pop, making her work distinctive and unclassifiable.[2][3]

Major Works and Collaborations

Her third album, Joy Ascension,[4] features contributions from drummer Dré Pallemaerts[5] and double bassist Chris Jennings, along with guest artists Bert Joris and Artyom Minasyan.[6] She has also composed music for theatre and film, working with directors such as Simon Abkarian, Stephen Faigenbaum, and Delphine Morel.[7]

Awards and Recognition

Macha Gharibian has been acclaimed by the press for her bold and innovative compositions. Her debut album Mars was praised for its bright future by Libération,[8] and her subsequent albums have solidified her place in the music industry as a significant contemporary artist.[9] In 2023, she was nominated for the title of Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, recognizing her contributions to the arts.[10] She was also featured in an in-depth interview on Radio France's FIP, highlighting her intense and profound musical style.[11]

Personal Life

Macha Gharibian keeps much of her personal life private. However, it is known that her multicultural background and family influences play a significant role in her music. She continues to perform internationally, bringing her unique sound to audiences around the world.[1]
