Emilio González Márquez (b. November 12, 1960inLagos de Moreno, Jalisco) is a Mexican politician affiliated to the National Action Party (PAN). He is the current Governor of Jalisco.

Personal life and education

Political career

González was an active member of the Mexican Democratic Party (PDM) in his native Jalisco; he served as municipal president (mayor) of Lagos de Moreno representing the PDM (19801982). He resigned to the PDM in 1988.

In1992 González joined the National Action Party (PAN) and secured a seat in the Chamber of Deputies via the proportional representation. From 1995to1997 he served as Regidor of the municipality of Guadalajara. In 1997 he was elected to serve in the LVII Legislature of the Mexican Congress. González presided over the PAN in the State of Jalisco from 1999to2002. In 2004 he was elected municipal president of Guadalajara; he left the position in 2005 seeking his party nomination for the governorship of Jalisco; he won his party's internal bid with 55.17% of the votes.

Controversies

He has recently been the target of criticism due to his known stance against condoms. His quote "El SIDA se da por la promiscuidad; no se da por no usar condones" ("AIDS is the result of promiscuity; not the result of not using condoms") has been harshly criticized by the media and other politicians.[1] Also, when some PAN State legislators were caught by a journalist outside a table dance club and the legislators immediately denied they were inside the club policemen helped them to go to their cars, the governor said, "Well, some people go to strip clubs and some of us read the Bible".

In 2008 he gave almost $120 millions of pesostoTelevisa and TV Azteca for them to produce TV shows and soap operas; offered to MTV USD$2 million to produce a program in the State.

Macrolimosna

He also promised a donation of MXN$90 millions to the Catholic church in order to build a Sanctuary despite criticism from the people, included catholics, and media[2].

OnApril 24, 2008, during a dinner party at the Expo-Guadalajara, he gave another MXN$15 million to the Catholic church, represented by cardinal Juan Sandoval Iñiguez, Archbishop of Guadalajara. During his speech announcing the "donation", he stated:『Don Juan Sandoval, qué desmadre traemos. ¿Sí o no?, nos estamos haciendo famosos don Juan. Digan lo que quieran, perdón señor cardenal: ¡chinguen a su madre!』(Don Juan Sandoval, whatta mess we have. We are becoming famous, aren't we, Don Juan?. People can say whatever they want, excuse me Mr. Cardinal, they can all go to fuck themselves!).[3]

The following day, he excused himself for the words used during the dinner and he said that『mis comentarios fueron una expresión coloquial sin destinatario, por eso la disculpa también es así, abierta, sin destinatario, porque no llevaba intención de ofender』(My comments were a colloquial expression, to none in particular, that is why my apology is also this way, open, to everybody, because it had no intention to offend anybody).[4]
