The first Slovenian football club, [[NK Ljubljana|Hermes]], was founded in Ljubljana in 1909. Two clubs based in Ljubljana – [[ND Ilirija Ljubljana|SK Ilirija]] and [[ND Slovan|SK Slovan]] – participated in the [[1920 Slovenian Republic League|1920 Slovenian League]] asa founding members.

There were two major Ljubljana derbies.
