Grono is a municipality in the district of Moesa in the Swiss cantonofGraubünden.
Grono is first mentioned in 1219 as de Grono. In 1395 it was mentioned as de Agrono.[3]
Grono has an area, as of 2006[update], of 14.8 km2 (5.7 sq mi). Of this area, 5.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 59.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (30.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]
The municipality is located in the Roveredo sub-district of the Moesa district. The village is on the right bank of the Moesa river by the mouth of the Calanca.
Grono has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 1,397.[5] As of 2008[update], 24.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals.[6] Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -2.2%.[4]
As of 2000[update], the gender distribution of the population was 51.4% male and 48.6% female.[7] The age distribution, as of 2000[update], in Grono is; 93 children or 10.2% of the population are between 0 to 9 years old. 40 teenagers or 4.4% are 10 to 14, and 40 teenagers or 4.4% are 15 to 19. Of the adult population, 107 people or 11.7% of the population are between 20 to 29 years old. 130 people or 14.2% are 30 to 39, 145 people or 15.8% are 40 to 49, and 138 people or 15.1% are 50 to 59. The senior population distribution is 87 people or 9.5% of the population are between 60 to 69 years old, 68 people or 7.4% are 70 to 79, there are 58 people or 6.3% who are 80 to 89, and there are 10 people or 1.1% who are 90 to 99.[6]
In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SP (29.1%), the CVP (26.7%) and the FDP (10.9%).[4]
The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Grono about 56.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).[4]
Grono has an unemployment rate of 2.54%. As of 2005[update], there were 13 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 8 businesses involved in this sector. 306 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 23 businesses in this sector. 321 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 55 businesses in this sector.[4]
