Hannan is a popular Irish surname coming from the Gaelic Ó hAnnáin or Ó hAnáin, most prevalently found in County Cork in the south-eastern portion of Ireland. [1]

Spelling variations of this family name include: Hannon, O'Hannon, Hannen, O'Hannen, Haneen, Hannon, Hanan and many more.

First found in county Roscommon where they were seated from very ancient times and were descended from the Kings of Ireland.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Bridget, James, and John Hannen who landed in Canada in 1847; Bridget Hannon landed in Boston Mass. in 1849; Charles, James, John, Michael, Thomas and William Hannon, who all settled in Philadelphia Pa. between 1765 and 1856. In Newfoundland, Edmond Hannon from Tintern Parish, county Wexford, was married at St. John's in 1802. Moses Hanen, his wife Elizabeth, and their 5 children settled in Washington County, PA between 1785 & 1789.
