Jedek is a Aslian language of Kelantan, Malaysia, first reported outside the area in 2017.[2] Although Jedek speakers describe themselves as ethnic MenriqorBatek to outsiders, their language is distinct from all other Aslian languages.
Jedek speakers have no autonym (endonym). Nearby Aslian speakers, particular the Jahai and Menriq, refer to them as the Jdɛk [ɟᶽəˈdɛk˺].[1]
Jedek is spoken by about 280 people[3] in Sungai Rual, located on the Rual River just south of the town of Jeli in Jeli District, Kelantan state, northern Peninsular Malaysia. Sungai Rual is a resettlement community of several bands of former foragers that had resided along the middle reaches of the Pergau River. Jedek is spoken just to the east of the Jahai-speaking area in northern peninsular Malaysia.[1]
Jedek is an Austroasiatic language belonging to the Jahaic (Northern Aslian) branch. It belongs to the Menraq-Batek group of languages.[1]
