The Kerala New Year (Malayalam Calendar) is on the day of vernal equinox, ie, the day when the sun is considered to move from the southern to the northern hemisphere. The day falls in the first Malayalam month of Medam(Mesham in Sanskrit) and is celebrated as [Vishu]. The day also coincides with similar new year festivities in several other parts of India which follow the solar calendar; such as [Vaisakhi] (inPunjab) or [Bihu] (inAssam).

Months of the Malayalam calendar

There are twelve months in the Malayalam year starting with Medam (March -April)and followed by Edavam, Mithunam, Karkidagam, Chingam, Kanni, Thulam, Vrischikam, Dhanu, Magaram, Kumbham, Meenam. The malayalam era is considered to have commenced in 825 AD. Various events have been attributed to birth of this era; however, no conclusive evidence is available. Historical facts however puts the samadhi of Aadi Sankarachrya in 825 AD as the most probable event.
