The League of Canadian Poets (LCP), founded in 1966, is a non-profit arts service organization which acts as the national association of professional and aspiring poets in Canada.[1] The league counts Phyllis Webb, Robert Kroetsch, and Margaret Atwood among its membership;[2][3] it organises poetry readings and competitions, runs a series of awards, including the Pat Lowther Memorial Award and publishes a newsletter and an annual anthology.[1]

Awards

The league organises the Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. The recipient of each award receives an honorarium of $1000. The Pat Lowther Memorial Award is named after Pat Lowther, and is for a book of poetry by a Canadian woman published in the preceding year - it was given to Anne Simpson in 2008.[4]

The Gerald Lampert Memorial Award is for a first book of poetry published by a Canadian, it is named after an arts administrator who had an interest in new writers -[5] it was given to Alex Boyd in 2008 for Making Bones Walk.[4] Anna Swanson was given the award in 2011 for The Nights Also.[6]
