Luo Tianyi (Chinese: 洛天依) is a Chinese Vocaloid released by Shanghai Henian Information Technology Co. Ltd. in 2012. She is the first Vocaloid Chinese singer. She was developed formerly by Bplats, Inc. under the Yamaha Corporation, but she has now been transferred to Shanghai Henian, which is already operating independently, the current brand is Vsinger.

Set as a 15-year-old girl with a healing voice line, she has a certain amount of fan and popularity within the ACG since 2012, and is known for her songs. With one of the songs covered in the 2015 HunanTV New Year's concert by a well-known singer Li Yuchun, she was successfully promoted to the public's vision,[1] and then began to appear on the mainstream platform many times, with a number of different fields of artists to perform, in the crowd has a wide range of visibility and influence, but also a number of endorsements of commercial brands, has a number of major concerts, so far there are seven official albums.

She's image was adapted by ideolo and the singing data was provided by Shan Xin(山新) and Kano. The Vocaloid 3 software was developed by G.K. and released on July 12, 2012, and five years later, the Vocaloid 4 software was developed by Renxingtu, released on December 30, 2017, and the Japanese version was released on May 21, 2018.

Background

Vocaloid is a song synthesis technology developed by Yamaha, and its application products. Since the release of products such as Hatsune Miku and Megpoid, songs or related works written by enthusiasts have been published on Niconico and YouTube, causing a boom in music and its derived culture, and the scene has attracted the attention of Japanese cultural enthusiasts, who have gradually rebroadcast them in China through translation, especially among young people.[2] At this time, more and more people were looking forward to the introduction of Vocaloid software in China, the provision of localization services and the Chinese version of the voice library.[3]

At that time, the Vocaloid marketing business was operated by Yamaha-directed Bplats, and in order to expand the Chinese market, Ren Li(任力), general manager of the company's business development department, was sent to Shanghai to set up a local sales company, Shanghai Henian, and obtained Yamaha's permission to carry out business in the name of Vocaloid™ China.[3] Vocaloid™ China announced the launch of The China Project on November 20, 2011.[4] The nature of the business is China-Japanese cooperation, the agent Shanghai Henian in the later role image and setting are integrated with the elements and connotations of traditional Chinese music and culture.[5] In order to produce Chinese products that can be loved by the Chinese people, in December for the Chinese masses and professional voice actors held a collection of image and voice actors. Vocaloid™ China launched a product in Shanghai in January 2012, announcing the shortlist of five image works and the election of Chinese voice actor Shan Xin.[6] Then Vocaloid ™ China adapted five official images based on the shortlisted works: Luo Tianyi, Yuezheng Ling, Yuezheng Longya, Zhiyu Moke and Mo Qingxian, and developed the voice library.[7] She was influenced by the Hatsune Miku in design, but also to attract the music creators of Chinese with its large fan base.[8] On July 12, 2012, Vocaloid ™ China released she's first Vocaloid software at the 8th China International Animation and Game Expo.[9][10] The original plan was to launch the Japanese version of the software in the fall,[11] however, it was later confirmed that it had been cancelled.[12] The public's awareness of software copyright was weak, and the motivation and content of music creation were lacking,[13] and the environmental differences between China and Japan and other factors, resulting in slow business development with little success.[14]

In 2013, the career manager, then general manager of Mercury Shanghai, Guidao Zechong(龟岛则充) began investing in the business out of a bullish outlook for virtual singers in China.[15] On June 30, Ren Li conducted a management buyout, and Shanghai Henian operated as an independent company after July 1,[16] Ten days later, under the planning of Mercury Shanghai, Vocaloid™ China released its second Vocaloid Chinese software Yanhe at the 9th China International Animation and Game Expo, and later established the brand Vocanese. At this time, the business had not yet started to develop, Yamaha withdrew from investment participation,[17] Vocaloid™ China business ended on January 31, 2014,[18] Guidao paid for the copyright of the main and related roles and officially moved from Yamaha to Shanghai Henian on February 1.[19] After acquiring the copyright, Vocanese began planning to cash in, deal with the infringement of surrounding goods, and tried to be a commercial brand endorsement.[13] At this time with the lovers of the sharp contradictions, Ren Li hoped that Luo Tianyi idolization and real mode of operation, to completely separate from UGC music.[14] In May of the same year, Ren Li set up Tianshi Culture, and in June Guidao set up Shanghai Zelishi. Ren Li left his post on February 2, 2015, citing internal inadequacies and dissatisfaction with investors, after announcing the development plan for the Zhanyin Lorra voice library in collaboration with Netease Junyuan Studio on July 15, 2014.[20]

At this time, the development of the business was still fatigued, the company's financial problems were increasingly serious, Guidao sought the help of a friend Cao Pu(曹璞), through her contacts to make Zhou Xingchi film investment opportunities, and in the friendship introduction pulled to the investment of Ofei Entertainment, after Cao Pu at the request of investors to take over the company's chairman and general manager,[15] and then set up the brand Vsinger, maintain UGC music and looked for operational breakthroughs. There was an opportunity in the new year 2015, when Bilibili gradually moved from a niche to a mainstream perspective as it grew in size.[21] At that time, a song Ordinary Disco(普通Disco) by singer Li Yuchun in the 2015 HunanTV New Year's Concert after the adaptation caused a lot of enthusiasm, but also let the masses realized that as the original singer, Luo Tianyi had existence of the creative culture behind her.[22] TV station saw this hot invitation to let her and the singer Yang Yuying to appear in the program 2016 HunanTV Spring Festival Gala, the broadcast attracted more attention, after the company let her gradually began to be active in the public media, in the visibility of the subsequent increase, she and the company's business development gradually turned bright,[23][24] it has also made investments in companies such as Shanghai Huandian, a subsidiary of Bilibili, which favors the virtual idol industry.[15] Vsinger then set out to develop a new voice library for virtual singers, with Luo Tianyi Vocaloid 4 and Japanese version software released on December 30, 2017 and May 21, 2018, respectively.[25][26] Yuezheng Longya, Zhiyu Moke and Mo Qingxian were also supported by software release. In March 2017, Shanghai Zelishi was changed to Tianshi Culture. From the beginning of 2019, Shanghai Huandian had become the largest shareholder in Shanghai Henian in order to expand Bilibili's virtual idol industry by increasing its holdings several times.[27] At the end of 2019, Shanghai Huandian acquired Chaodian Culture, which is responsible for Bilibili's offline activities and creator's brokerage business, and will be responsible for Bilibili's virtual idol business in addition to maintaining its original business.[28] In the end, Shanghai Henian was incorporated into the Chaodian Culture as a wholly owned subsidiary.[29]

Character

Newcomer VOCALOID, an outstanding freshman at VOCALOID Academy, comes from the "Shenzhou Collar", which retains the traditional Chinese style. The legendary VOCALOID predecessors who have made history in the human world in the past are very much looking forward to, but also look forward to one day they can come to the human world, become the new VOCALOID singer, so that she suddenly acquired the VOCALOID Academy on a certain day, and with an important task, as the new VOCALOID messenger came to the human world.

Tianyi's character is more incisive and quiet, more concerned about the people around her, emotional is quite rich, easy to be affected by other people's feelings, or be involved in the pace of others, so it seems a little presumed and natural, but she also has a stubborn side. Never give up on what you recognize (and have the tenderness to think for others, to move others, and to stick to your ideals no matter how hard you work). At the same time, emotionally rich she is very good at singing to express their feelings and other people's feelings, for her, there is nothing happier than singing to bring happiness to others.

Because the first to the human world, is not good at human language, so usually can not talk to people, can only sing to express their feelings.

 — Vocaloid™ China ART COLLECTIONS Page 12.

Character Design

The original case of the character was MOTH's painting Yayin Gongyu(雅音宫羽), which was named the winning work in the image collection event held in 2011,[6] She is a highly recognizable image of the Chinese style - with Chinese hairstyles and clothes based on the girls' school uniforms of the China in the 1920s-30s era.[30] The event received 12 votes and 83.3% rating from netizens at the end of the event.[31] Although the first popular work in the event is Yu Caiyin and was officially selected, but for marketing reasons did not first launch it.[13]

The final design was completed by the Touhou Project fan works painter ideolo.[32] The design was inspired by the way the monster sea dragon swims in the sea in the game Monster Hunter.[33] Unlike previous loose sets on Japanese Vocaloid characters, Luo Tianyi was given detailed and worldview by Vocaloid™ China. Tianyi is a fifteen-year-old girl, born far away from the human world, for a mission to come to the human world and meet other partners such as Yuezheng Ling. Tianyi has an elf called Tiandian(天钿) from a young age, it is set to be ten years old and thirty centimeters long, can innate into a microphone, will replace Tianyi when she is unable to express emotions. The symbol of Tianyi is 羽(pinyin: yǔ, literally means feather) in China's traditional pentatonic scale(五声音阶), representing the symbol is the Sanskrit "प", the set of ART COLLECTIONS contains the first draft of the design and more details.[34]: 11–13

After the final design was announced, it caused controversy among fans, and the difference between the original case and led to some regret among fans of Yayin Gongyu, which Vocaloid™ China later issued a statement saying was an attempt to promote The Vocaloid culture with Chinese cultural characteristics in the hope of gaining fans understanding and support.[35]

The official worldview has had an impact on the creation of people, and after the brand was changed to Vsinger, the operator said it would no longer be implemented and established.[36] Vsinger opened up about the new image at the 2016 Firefly Anime Game Carnival, which fans generally rejected as a far cry from the original style, and eventually announced the decision, only as a costume for a later concert.[37] The official new image of the Vocaloid 4 software and the Japanese version of the software was later announced,[38][39] and TID to set it up.[38] His first collaboration with the authorities was when he was invited to draw illustrations for ART COLLECTIONS.[34]: 48–49  Before the first official concert, it was announced that Luo Tianyi official color was sky blue#66ccff.[40]

Meaning of the Name

Project producer jarryestel (Wang Gao, 王杲) cites "Yu(羽) is the sound of water, living in the north, time series is winter"(羽为水声,居北方,时序为冬) in Book of Han, to reflect the character of Luo Tianyi. He also explained the meaning of the name to fans on Baidu Tieba:[41][42]

洛(pinyin: Luò) is a Chinese character with Chinese geography (Luoyang, Luo River) and Chinese culture (Luo Shen, the god of Luo River), but also a common Chinese family name.

天(pinyin: Tiān, means the sky) is also commonly used by Chinese people to refer to their own (such as the Celestial Empire(天朝)), Luo Tianyi's own setting is also a singer from heaven.

依(pinyin: yī) has the same pronunciation with "一", which represents that she is the first Chinese virtual singer. It also has the meaning of relying on mutual support and yiren(伊人), an appellation to very beautiful girl in Chinese culture.

Software

The software was originally developed using the Vocaloid 3 engine, which was released in 2011. Vocaloid uses song synthesis techniques known as "bridge synthesis types",[43] The song is synthesized by stitching together the composition of the song in the frequency domain by selecting the fragment data from the real-life song recording. Vocaloid's system consists of three parts: a "score editor" in which users enter lyrics and tunes, a "singing database" that includes fragment data, and a "synthetic engine" that synthesizes songs by connecting song clips. The score information entered by the user in the score editor is transmitted to the composition engine, which selects the required fragment data from the song database and then connects it and outputs it into a song. The score editor is embedded with the synthesis engine as the host software for the song database. Initially only Japanese and English are supported, and since Vocaloid 3 has Chinese functionality.[44][45] With the Chinese singing database installed, the score editor recognizes the Chinese pinyin and phonetic information entered by the user as the corresponding X-SAMPA information based on the Chinese dictionary, but does not recognize Chinese characters and initials. To bring the song closer to reality, users can add emotional parameters such as strong and weak ups and downs, vibrato, and breathing to the editor.[46] Available editors are Vocaloid Editor, Cubase plug-in edition Vocaloid Editor for Cubase and Crypton Piapro Studio.

VOCALOID™3 Library Luo Tianyi[7]
Launched on July 12, 2012 and produced and released by Bplats subsidiary Shanghai Henian. According to officials, it has a healing soundline. Code-named V3LB0011CN, the main developer is G.K, a former director of music production in Shanghai Henian, and another person assisted in the completion.[47] G.K. was responsible for recording, sampling editing, and sealing most of the work.[48]
The singing data was provided by Chinese voice actor Shan Xin, who was selected by the voiceover, and when asked to describe the voice of the first Vocaloid™ China character in her heart, she replied, "I hope it's a voice of emptiness, serenity, healing, strength and courage".[32] Then, under the supervision, discussion and reflection of the employees, she was selected from among the 100 candidates.[49] When recording to ensure that the finished product can adapt to a variety of musical styles and restrain most of the emotions, she because of professional reasons, hoping to give a part of the soul to quietly convey "strength", "courage" and "love" feelings to everyone.[32] Jarryestel points out that because of the wide variety of dialects in China, many people will feel a little uncomfortable with the way Luo Tianyi bites in modern standard Chinese (Beijing voice).[5]

Best known for her song Ordinary Disco, ilem was inspired by a teacher's words in class, where magical melodies and funny lyrics attracted millions of hits and led to several well-known singers singing in variety shows or concerts.[55]

After the software was officially released, The account name "Nightmare of Christmas Eve"(平安夜的噩梦) released a music video for H.K. Jun's song "Millennium Recipes Carol"(千年食谱颂), which included many of China's traditional food. Then Tianyi's fans called her "the world No.1 foodaholic your highness".[23]
