Indian Men's rights movement was started by Ram Prakash Chug in Delhi in early 80s soon after draconian laws were passed in favour of women in Indian parliament and women started misusing these laws. Later on, in 1997, Purush Hakka Saurakshan Samiti was formed in Nasik to raise voice against imprisonment of husbands and their family in false dowry cases. In Bangalore, Sangyabalya was formed in 2003 and many women joined in as well to campaign against abuse of men by their wives.

SIF was founded in March 9, 2005 by unification of a number of family's rights organisations across India. Many women (i.e. mothers and sistersof abused men) joined the organisation.

Asha Kiran was formed in March 2005 in Bangalore with 13 founders including 7 techies. Most of them had by that time successfully won their cases against them.

Many Techies (Software Engineers) who faced false cases of dowry harassment by their wives joined in as well. They mostly got inspired by Warren Farrell and Christina Hoff Sommers.

As the movement started growing, it became difficult to manage it. So, Save Indian Family(SIF) was formed in internet/blogosphere to coordinate activities of various men's organisations. In 2005, Pariwarik Suraksha Sanstha was formed in New Delhi. Many Non resident Indians (residing at US, UK or Middle East) also joined in.

The Indians in United States started a protest website www.498a.org to create awareness and campaign against harassment of American Green Card holders by Indian biased laws.

Even though it started as a men's movement, there are significant number of women are also involved. So, in 2006, SIF started providing free support (psychological and legal) for women in abusive relationships as well. This was initiated when a the mother of a victim committed suicide unable to bear the contant mental abuse inflicted by the victim's wife.

Mumbai NGO Protect indian family spun off from the SIF umbrella in March 2006.
