Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdelhamid "Mido" (Arabic: أحمد حسام "ميدو") (born February 23, 1983inCairo), is an Egyptian footballer who is a striker who is currently playing for Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur.
Mido started his career at Egyptian club Al-Zamalek before moving to Europe. At K.A.A. Gent, the club that discovered him in Egypt, he got his breakthrough. He then moved to Ajax Amsterdam, averaging a goal every other game, but clashed with coach Ronald Koeman and reportedly threw a pair of scissors at fellow Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimović after an argument. [1] He has earned 43 caps for Egypt, but lost his place in the national team after a bitter falling-out in 2004 with then-coach Marco Tardelli. He claimed to be unavailable for the national team due to an injury, but played in a friendly match with Roma 24 hours later. Tardelli immediately dropped him, and the national federation announced that he would not play again for the team.
In January 2005, Mido was signed by Tottenham Hotspur on an 18-month loan deal. He scored two goals on his Spurs debut and continued to improve in the following months, proving to be well-suited for the Premiership. In the 2005-06 season, he scored 11 goals in 27 games. By this time Tardelli had been sacked as Egypt coach, and the federation signaled that they would consider a return by Mido if he were willing to apologise for his past behaviour. In February, while his new teammates were playing in an FA Cup tie for which he was ineligible, Mido flew to Cairo and made a public apology. The following month, he was recalled to the national team.
OnFebruary 8, 2006, it was announced that Mido had been thrown out of the Egypt team as a consequence of an argument with coach Hassan Shehata in which it was falsely rumored that he called his manager a 'donkey' (interpreted as an "idiot" or an "ass") during the African Cup of Nations. The argument had started after Mido reacted badly to being substituted in the semi-final game against Senegal. The Egyptian Football Association subsequently ruled Mido out of the international team for six months. Mido later apologised to the coach and was allowed back into the side, but only watched from the bench as his teammates won the Cup by beating Cote d'Ivoire 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the final.
Mido ended the 2005-06 Premiership season as Tottenham's second-highest goalscorer with 11 goals, establishing a great following at the club. He also expressed that he did not wish to return to Roma, but rather sign permanently with Tottenham. On February 18, 2006, Tottenham manager, Martin Jol declared that the club were confident of signing Mido on a permanent basis due to his good performances. However, in May of 2006 Tottenham signed striker Dimitar Berbatov for €16m[1](approx £10.9M), and announced that talks concerning a permanent stay for Mido had broken down, meaning that the player would return to play for Roma.
Mido was soon speculated to be on his way back to the Premiership, rumoured to be close to signing for both Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United during the summer, and reportedly rejecting the former [2] in early July. Meanwhile, it's worth noting that Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was not in charge of the team when Mido first left. According to Sky Sports, Spalletti was happy with Mido, describing him as being "physically good" and "good at heading", hinting that he may be a part of his plans for the next season.[3].
However, on August 29th 2006, Mido re-joined Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent deal confirmed by A.S. Roma for a fee of €6.75m (approx £4.6m).[2] Mido's return to Tottenham was popular with some fans, and he soon commented to the team's official website that he "always knew in [his] heart [he] would be coming back" and that he "[couldn't] wait to pull on a Tottenham shirt, play at the Lane and score some more goals".[3]
After being scoreless for his first 5 appearances as a permanent Tottenham player, he finally found the net against West Ham with a fantastic volley, and followed that with a man-of-the-match performance against lowly MK Dons in the Carling Cup, including 2 goals. He has to contend with being fourth in line for one of the two striking spots, but insists that this is a sign of the club's strength, and something he was fully aware of before rejoining the club.[4] However he has been linked with moves to Manchester City F.C. .[5] and Celta Vigo
On 27th November 2007, Mido revealed in GQ magazine that he was a boyhood Manchester United fan, his favourite player being Red Devil wing-back Paul Parker.
On the 31st January 2007, Mido scored what could have been his last goal for Tottenham Hotspur as the strikers potential move to Manchester City was thought to be on the verge of being completed. The goal came in the 85 minute of Arsenal's 3-1 Carling Cup victory over Tottenham. But according to Stuart Pearce, manager of Manchester City, the deal fell through half an hour before the close of the transfer window. Mido remains a Spurs player. On 20th July 2007, a £6M fee was agreed for Mido to move to Birmingham City. [6]
