Consumption of meat has never been forbidden in Japan, Japan's religions are Shinto and Buddhism which don't forbid consumption of meat and eating boar and many animals are extremely common in Japanese culture. The cow was deemed a worker, thus it wasn't commonly eaten (similar to how the Chinese didn't eat theirs either).undo
