Olodum, founded in 1979, is a cultural group based in the black community of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. One of many similar groups in the city (and elsewhere in Brazil) it offers cultural activities to young people, largely centred around music, but also runs theatre productions and other activities. Its stated aim is to combat racism, to encourage self-esteem and pride among African Brazilians, and to fight for civil rights for all marginalised groups. The group is an active participant in Carnaval each year, and its music group (orBanda) has released records in its own right, as well as featuring on recording by stars such as Daniela Mercury.
