Power Unlimited is a Dutch multi-format computer and video games magazine, covering many video game platforms including Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PC games, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable and mobile games. It is the biggest gaming magazine in the Benelux. The first issue was released in June 1993.[citation needed]

History

Power Unlimited started in June 1993 as a new label of VNU Business Publications.[citation needed] With VNU's other labels being primarily free business magazines[citation needed], a gaming magazine was considered a big risk that lacked a real audience[citation needed] and agreeing on the risk of the concept, VNU started out with only freelance editors[citation needed]. One year later, the concept had proven itself worthy[citation needed], and an Editor in Chief and Final Editor were employed[citation needed]. Since that first year, Power Unlimited has become the biggest gaming magazine of the Benelux, and to this day, still is[citation needed].

Besides the magazine, Power Unlimited has also expanded to other activities. Power Unlimited organizes an annual gaming event since 2003, they host the television show GameKings and they publish school agenda[citation needed].

From November 2007, Power Unlimited is being published by HUB Uitgevers (HUB Publishers), after being taken over from VNU Media.[citation needed]

Features

Reviews

In the 14-year history of the magazine, more than 1,500 games have been reviewed.[citation needed] Reviewed games are given an overall score marked x.x out of 10[citation needed]. Although several games have received scores high in the 9's, only four have been given a perfect 10: these are Sentinel Returns, Gran Turismo 2, Super Mario Galaxy and Grand Theft Auto IV.[citation needed]

Sometimes however, such as with the game Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, a bogus score is given to make a statement.[citation needed] In the above case, the game was rewarded a score of 9.9, 0.1 point higher than The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which was according to the editor in question, extremely overrated.[1] This was also the case with the game Beavis and Butthead, which was given a 13,2.[citation needed]

Other features

Besides reviews, the magazine also offers previews, tips & tricks, news and specials, as well as a comic and a mailbox where readers can voice their opinion, or sometimes have their questions answered by the editors.[citation needed]

Target Audience

The magazine especially targets the teenage gamer demographic, male gamers between 13 and 19 years old.[citation needed]

Editorial team

In the magazine's history, there have been many editors. When the magazine started in 1993, the entire team consisted of freelancers, including the editor in chief (Matt Heffels).[citation needed] Besides Matt, the first editors were Ben de Dood, Bjorn Bruinsma, Kees de Koning, Michael Schaeffer and Adam Eeuwens.[citation needed] After one year, Power Unlimited got two employees, Editor in Chief Edwin Ammerlaan and current Final Editor Ed Wiggemans. Although most editors are currently still working on a freelance basis, a number of them are employed.[citation needed]

Currently, the editorial team consists of:

  • Niels Roodenburg (Editor in Chief)
  • Ed Wiggemans (Final editor)
  • Jan-Johan Belderok (alias J.J. Belderok)
  • Maarten Blonk
  • Jan Meyroos
  • Jeroen Roding
  • Jurjen Tiersma
  • Steven Saunders
  • Wouter Brugge

A number of these editors also have a function as a presentator for the weekly tv-show Gamekings.[citation needed]
