Raising for Effective Giving (REG) is a charity fundraising nonprofit. Its members consist mostly of professional poker players and financial investors who pledge to donate a percentage of their income to selected charities.[1][2]
REG was co-founded by the professional poker player Liv Boeree, who was introduced to the idea of effective giving by a mutual friend, Adriano Mannino, who believes that people in the developed world should donate to organizations that effectively reduce suffering in the developing world. REG donates to, and recommends, selected charities based on their cost-effectiveness. One criterion in the cost-effectiveness evaluations is how much money the charity requires to save a life.[3] To fulfill the requirements of the pledge, members may donate to REG, certain global poverty organizations, certain animal welfare organizations, or certain "meta-charities" such as REG's parent organization and affiliates.[4]
REG members donated approximately $400,000 in 2014 and approximately $600,000 in 2015.[5][6][7][8][9] Recipients included The Against Malaria Foundation, The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), The Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR), GiveDirectly, GiveWell, The Humane League, Mercy For Animals, The Great Ape Project, and The Nonhuman Rights Project.
REG members wear patches with the name of the organization at poker tournaments, to advertise their commitment to donate their winnings.[3][10] Two REG members, Martin Jacobson and Jorryt van Hoof, were among the November Nine that played at the World Series of Poker Main Event final table.[11] Jacobson placed first, earning him the title of poker world champion and winning $10,000,000, of which $250,000 was subsequently donated through REG.[12]
The organization has been mentioned on a number of mainstream international news outlets, including The Independent,[13] Sport1,[14][15] and Swiss daily newspaper Tages-Anzeiger.[16] Additional coverage within the international poker community includes Bluff Europe,[17][18] PokerNews,[19][20][21] and the PokerStars blog,[22] among others.
Professional poker player Rupert Elder argued on his blog that it may be better to leave money for charity in one's will, instead of donating now, as REG recommends.[23] REG subsequently responded to Elder on their website.[24][25]
