Súðavík is a village and municipality (Súðavíkurhreppur) and a fishing village on the west coast of ÁlftarfjörðurinVestfirðir, Iceland (66°02′N 23°00′W / 66.03°N 23.00°W / 66.03; -23.00).
The population of Súðavík is around 190.
On January 16, 1995, an avalanche, fell on the village early in the morning around and destroyed several buildings, most of them residents houses. Killing 14 (including 8 children's) in the progress and injuring 12 others. Because of severe snow storm, rescue operators worked in terrible conditions, which made the rescue work difficult and dangerous. While they admitted to rescue and aid those that where involved in the disaster, the final survivors were rescued 15 and 24 hours after avalanche had fallen.
On the mountain, Súðavíkurhlíð, above the village, is a plateau. When the wind blows from the NW a ridge on the plateau allows snow to accumulate on the mountain edge above the main part of the old village. An avalanche from Traðargil later fell, hitting more houses in another part of the town, that had already been evacuated. Then yet another avalanche from Traðargil fell even further than the previous one and only hitting area that had been evacuated. Avalanches fell from many other gullies and mountainsides during the avalanche cycle that winter.
As the result of the disaster, the area of the village was considered to unsafe, for resident to continue to live there so it was decided, to move the village to area considered to be safe, and start rebuilding, old houses were bought by authorities, resident moved in almost year after the disaster. Since its forbidden to live in the old village after the disaster, the residents houses are offered as guest house for tourists over the summer time. Same can be said about buildings that belonged to authorities, most of them where abandoned and new grand buildings put in operation in the new town. All industries where moved withe the expectation of the freezing plant, which continues to operate in similar manner as it did prior to the avalanche. The main industries now are fishing, fish processing and tourism.
In Súðavík are some summerhouses which can be rented by tourists, as well as a sea angling company (Iceland Sea Angling) and a tourist guiding business.[3][4] The Arctic Fox Center contains an exhibition and offers the opportunity to volunteer.[5]
