The thirty-fifth season of the variety series Saturday Night Live began on September 26, 2009 and will conclude in 2010onNBC.
Excluding the 1981-1982 season, this may be the first season without original SNL announcer Don Pardo, who made known his wishes to retire from the show after the 2008-2009 season finale.[1][2] Although no official statement has been issued regarding whether or not Pardo will return to the program for its 35th season, Pardo did act as announcer on the season's first episode.
In early September 2009, news broke that featured players Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins had both been dropped from the show.[3] Watkins said that producer Lorne Michaels told her that he "felt deep down that I should have my own show… He said it had nothing to do with talent. And I’m just going to go on that. That was his only explanation."[3] Also, long-time cast member Darrell Hammond will no longer be in the cast this season, but is still expected to make cameo appearances when needed,
Also in September, it was announced that Nasim Pedrad and Jenny Slate had been hired as featured players.[4] Slate is a frequent performer with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City and has appeared in comedy segments on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Pedrad is an alum of The Groundlings in Los Angeles and had a successful run of her one-woman show "Me, Myself and Iran" at the Los Angeles division of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
Weekend Update Thursday is again scheduled to air in conjunction with this season. As many as thirteen episodes will be produced.[5] SNL Thursday will begin on September 17, 2009 and end on October 8, 2009.[6]
