The decoration was the highest unit award of the Coast Guard, and was presented to Coast Guard units which performed outstanding service to the Coast Guard as a whole.
The Presidential Unit Citation (US) and Joint Meritorious Unit Award are senior to the Secretary of Transportation Outstanding Unit Award. Additional awards of the decoration are denoted by gold award stars.
