DrStamatios (Tom) M. Krimigis is a scientist who has done a lot of work for space exploration. He directed most of space programs with robotic spacecrafts which explored (and still explore) our solar system. He is a specialist in solar, interplanetary and magnetospheric physics.
He was born in 1938 in VrontadosofChios, Greece and he finised the local high school. After he went to the USA where he studed at University of Minnesota (Bachelor of Physics, 1961) and at University of Iowa (Master of Science, 1963 and Ph.D., 1965 in Physics). He has the Head Emeritus, Space Department Applied physics Laboratory The Johns Hopkins University Laurel, Maryland, USA and he is a member of Academy of Athens, Greece, where he has the Chair of Science of Space.
He is Principal Investigator on the NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and Titan (1990-present), on Voyager 1 and 2 Spacecraft, on Explorer 47 and 50. He is Co-Principal InvestigatoronNASA-ESA Ulysses solar polar orbiter (1978-present), on MESSENGER, on GEOTAIL, on Advanced Composition Explorer and on New Horizons mission. Also he was Co-Principal InvestigatoronNASA Galileo mission to Jupiter (1977-2003) and Co-Investigator with James Van Allen on the University of Iowa Particle Experiments on NASA Mariner 3, 4 (toMars) and Mariner 5 (toVenus).
The International Astronomical Union in 1999 named asteroid 8323 Krimigis (previously 1979 UH) to honor him.
