Usage

This template facilitates the use of heraldry as a means to simply and orderly illustrate armigers (e.g. countries, regions, cities, persons or organisations) in lists.

For non-heraldic emblems, Template:Seal may be used.

Background

1341 gathering of prince-electors from the constituent states of the Holy Roman Empire.
allegorical figure of Germania (woman, sword, flowing hair, flowing robes), seated, sword on her lap
Germania, a personification of the German nation, appears in Philipp Veit's fresco (1834–36). She holds the coat of arms of the German Confederation while sitting on a pedestal displaying the arms of the seven traditional Electors of the Holy Roman Empire.
British post-WWI memorial tabletinBrussels Cathedral, displaying the royal arms, dominions' arms ( Canada, South Africa,  New Zealand, Newfoundland and  Australia) as well as text in English and Latin.

Heraldic emblems - typically coats of arms - have since the Middle Ages been used to represent or identify personal/geographical entities, preceding flags for such use by several centuries. Moreover, heraldic emblems have traditionally also been preferred to flag designs for representation on any medium other than actual flags, i.e. on non-fluttering/fixed surfaces such as paintings, paper, carved wood, metal, masonry, leather, stone or stained glass. Heraldic emblems may however also be displayed on fabric, either embroidered or as a tabard.

Parameters

Field name Required Description Default value Special value
size no The size of the arms. Include the denomination "px". 20px N/A
link no Where one is directed by clicking on the arms The initial value written {{Coat of arms|X}} N/A
text no The piece of text appearing on the right-hand side of the arms. The initial value written {{Coat of arms|X}} "none" gives no text whatsoever

Principles for consistency and visibility

Based on conventional heraldic practice, the following premise ensures a meaningful degree of uniformity and distinctiveness of the motifs even at low resolutions (20 pixels is the default width):

I: Escutcheons exclusively

All elements of achievement save the indispensable escutcheon are omitted.

E.g. for Belgium, Belgium is shown instead of more elaborate variants such as or.

Similarly, for Austria: Austria is shown instead of .

II: Unmarshalled versions preferred

When an escutcheon has multiple variants, the one with least marshalling, i.e. the simplest, is employed.

E.g. for Sweden, Sweden is shown instead of the following quartered variant: .

Similarly, for Liechtenstein: Liechtenstein is shown instead of .
