The News with Brian Williams is the former flagship signature news broadcast on both MSNBC and CNBC. Anchor Brian Williams gained respect through this broadcast. The News is a broadcast, mainly for viewers during primetime who may have missed the evening news on it's counterpart network, NBC, called, NBC Nightly News.
During the Decision 2000 election coverage, The News is the prime program for MSNBC for the coverage, with Brian Williams the prime anchor.
John Seigenthaler often substitutes for Brian Williams during his absence, mainly Williams' own duties as substitute for the flagship evening news program on NBC, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
Later, MSNBC canceled The News, in order to make room for a new show during primetime. The News is now only on CNBC, and is the main news broadcast on CNBC. Viewership on The News suffered, following the CNBC-exclusive-only annoucement.
In2002, NBC announced that Brian Williams will take over from Tom BrokawonNBC Nightly Newsin2004. In the beginning of 2004, Williams stepped down as anchor of The News, and CNBC announced that substitute, John Seigenthaler, will take over as the new anchor of The News, to be called, The News on CNBC. The program was canceled shortly after.
