Kal-El, commonly referred to as Superman, is an extra-terrestrial superhero who operates in Metropolis. As an infant, he was sent to Earth from his dying home planet Krypton. He is noted as being the first confirmation of life beyond Earth.
While how he came to Earth is unknown, witnesses from Kansas report that Kal-El arrived on Earth in an escape pod in 1948. He was then said to be raised by an unknown couple in the Smallville area, although these rumours are of conspiracy origin. Kal-El made his existence on Earth known in 1978, when he helped a woman clear her name of murder. In 1982, Kal-El formed the Justice Society of America with fellow superheroes Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and the Martian Manhunter.
Kal-El's abilities seem to include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, reflexes and durability, as well as sub-zero breath, heat-vision, x-ray vision], and solar energy absorption. Kal-El may also exhibit a genius-level intellect.
Kal-El is celebrated world-wide as one of the most popular superheroes to ever exist. While he has been the target of many supervillains, he has been largely unscathed from most attacks. However, Kal-El has been purported to be harmed by Kryptonite, a mineral of Kryptonian origin, although scientists have been unable to determine why it poses a threat to him. However, they have hypothesised that the mineral emits radiation that is hazardous towards Kryptonians.
