One can argue that one contribution to mathematics is "more important" than another, but a great number of mathematicians have acknowledged Pierre Deligne's work as quite profound (and there is evidence for this, of course). You have provided no evidence ) |

Grothendieck himself was critical of Deligne'e "Weil 1" paper. I do not have his statement to hand at the moment or it would have been included in the Wiki article but I will try to locate it and then include it in Wiki. It is not a question of a "great number of mathematicians" viewpoints that are important but the opinions of mathematicians whose views are worth considering. D de MC, December 31, 2009. |
