Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is a graduate medical university in Bangladesh.[5] The university, established in 1965. It offers a wide range of academic programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, and postgraduate degrees. These programs encompass BSN, MSN, MPH, MD, MS, PhD, and various diploma degrees. While, the university provides undergraduate BSN and graduate MSN degrees in Nursing with its own faculty, the Faculty of Nursing, and various affiliated institutions, such as NIANER.[6] it does not offer undergraduate medical (MBBS) or dental (BDS) degrees.[7][8][9] It also serves as a hospital with 750 beds.[10][11][12]

History

[edit]

Establishment of the university was an upgrade of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR). IPGMR was established in December 1965, as a government-controlled postgraduate institute for medical research and studies. It was housed in the now defunct Hotel Shahbag, once the biggest hotel in Dhaka. The hotel was named after Shahbag, the neighborhood where it was located.[13]

From 2010, many of the medical and public health colleges/institutes have become affiliated to BSMMU. For example BIRDEM, BIHS, DMC, SSMC, NICVD, NITOR and others.[14]

It was renamed as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by the Act 1, 1998 of Jatiyo Sangshad after the first President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[citation needed]

Library and publications

[edit]

BSMMU has an academic library known as BSMMU Central Library, and a digital library. The university publishes a peer-reviewed medical journal, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Journal. ISSN 2224-7750(online) 2074-2908 (print).[15] It publishes 4 issue per year.[16]
