WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:08, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Request for comment on Biographies of living people

Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, many wikiproject topics will be effected.

The two opposing positions which have the most support is:

  1. supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
  2. opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect

Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.

Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced BLP articles if they are not sourced, so your project may want to source these articles as soon as possible. See the next, message, which may help.

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Holidays/Archive 7/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Holidays/Archive 7/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 00:51, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Be careful about the meaning of "holiday"

I recently updated the Holiday article to mention the fact that in Australia, the word holiday is used only to refer to days which involve time away from work or school for most people. Days such as Valentines Day, Ash Wednesday, Yom Kippur, Halloween, etc, which do not involve time away from work or school, are NOT described as holidays in Australia.

The definition on the Portal:Holidays page implies that the same meaning is used right across the English speaking world. Clearly that is wrong. Unlike the editor(s) who made the original incorrect claim for the whole English speaking world, I don't pretend to know enough about other cultures to be sure about the situation in other places. There could be other places similar to Australia, and there could be other differences. Can I ask that editors take these known and possible differences in meaning into consideration when using the word holiday in articles?

Halloween task force

Consensus has been reached (several months ago) to merge WikiProject Halloween into WikiProject Holidays as a task force similar in scope to the Christmas task force. Unless someone from WP Holidays objects, I'll begin moving the Halloween task force into it's new home. -Mabeenot (talk) 07:19, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

The meaning of the word "holiday"

In the United States and possibly Canada too, the word holiday means a specific day or days to observe a particular occasion or event. These days include Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentines day, etc. To take a break from work, the term "vacation" is used.

In the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, the word "holiday" is more likely to mean taking a break from work, and the term vacation is not used at all. When you think about it, the American holiday is usually a day off work, so maybe that is the more sensible term.

If you would like more explanation or a nice Australian holiday/vacation, check out http://www.discountreservationsaustralia.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.220.206.4 (talk) 02:48, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Christmas articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Christmas articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Has wiki been kidnapped?

I thought this was a forum for truly all of us humans to present our common human information, but I found a political caveat instead. The word Christmas is not of a single origin (just ask yourself why no other European language has the word Christ in their translation of the word Christmas). How come the English Wiki on the word Christmas is totally dominated (dictated) by Anglo-American-Christian mainstream with only showing some easily acceptable sidies, and the page then locked (Wow!). Locking in this case equals caving in politically to one side. Only when all sides are represented, only then do we have a final wiki. District-election thinking is dumb. Wiki is, must and should be proportional; it should show real human nature in its results.

I feel sorry for Jimmy Wales. He probably did not expect his sites to become politically-entrenched niches. Are you interested in what I am talking about in this particular case? Just google 'kerstmas' (choose first on the list). Wiki is broad. Anyone believing wiki should be narrow probably also believes in Santa.

We're missing an article about the Feast of the Hunter's Moon. Currently a dab page resides, linking to the calendrical lunar event, and an album. It would be good to convert the dab page into an article, with a hatnote to the album instead. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 14:14, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Request for input in discussion forum

Given the closely linked subjects of the various religion, mythology, and philosophy groups, it seems to me that we might benefit from having some sort of regular topical discussion forum to discuss the relevant content. I have put together the beginnings of an outline for such discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/2011 meeting, and would very much appreciate the input of any interested editors. I am thinking that it might run over two months, the first of which would be to bring forward and discuss the current state of the content, and the second for perhaps some more focused discussion on what, if any, specific efforts might be taken in the near future. Any and all input is more than welcome. John Carter (talk)

Hi, I have just started a page on Old Twelveth Night, based on my copy of Patricia Morell's book "Festivals and Customs". I would be grateful if any one could expand it. Many thanks, ACEOREVIVED (talk) 22:22, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

The "Loyalty Day" article still contains incorrect information

As far as I can determine, a Proclamation has been issued every year Here are the proclamation numbers for the "no proclamation" years cited by the article:

1959 proclamation 3282 1960 proclamation 3343 1966 proclamation 3716 1967 proclamation 3745 1968 proclamation 3845 1969 proclamation 3904 1970 proclamation 3975 1971 proclamation 4036 1972 proclamation 4118 1973 proclamation 4201 1974 proclamation 4277

I do not know why the "Presidency Project" footnote 7 in the article is missing these I found all the proclamations mainly in subirectories of www.gpo.gov, but there is no single search I have found that contains all the info, so I have not corrected the article text. 98.14.207.223 (talk) 18:49, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Proposed MOS for Religion

There is now a proposed general Manual of Style for Religion and other articles relating to ethoses or belief systems at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Manual of style. Any input would be welcome. I personally believe at least one of the reasons why many articles in this field have been as contentious as they have been is because of lack of such guidelines, and would very much welcome any input from others to help come up with some generally acceptable solutions to some of these problems. Naming

Are these pages suppose to be the official name of the holiday or the common name? We have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, officially " Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr." and we have Washington's Birthday, which is commonly called President's Day. Why no standard? Christmas controversy Norway and Sweden

There is a talk page discussion about whether controversy in Norway and Sweden about public schools attending Advent/Christmas masses in Church belongs in the article. As we are currently only two disputans, any input from other users would be appreciated. Regards Iselilja (talk) 14:40, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
