Welcome to Operation Majestic Titan ("OMT"), the code name for a long-term collaboration that will improve Wikipedia's coverage of all battleship- and battlecruiser-related articles. If you would like to participate, please add your name to the list of contributors, and feel free to like our Facebook page. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or anything else, please leave a message on the talk page and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

OMT's primary objective is to create a series of featured topics centered around the battleships and battlecruisers considered, planned, built, operated, canceled, or otherwise recorded. There are 557 articles which will be included, from the earliest pre-dreadnoughts to the dreadnoughts and on to the last of the super-dreadnoughts, along with their associated ship classes. Once all articles are featured, this project will reorient to ensuring that the articles remain there.

This objective is designated "Phase I". In the future, we are going to working on improving weapons, sub-systems, and other miscellaneous subjects that relate to battleships. In our preliminary planning, these have been designated as Phases II through V.

Phase I

The ships themselves: all battleships and battlecruisers are included in this phase, along with their respective class articles.

Phase II

Weaponry: all guns aboard the battleships or battlecruisers in question will be covered under this phase, to include missiles, CIWS, electronic warfare, and anti-submarine warfare, fire control systems, and other ordnance-related systems.

Phase III

Major historical highlights: this phase will address battles and other major events that involved battleships or battlecruisers.

Phase IV

Biographies: this phase includes any person of note who served on or commanded a battleship or battlecruiser.

Phase V

Miscellaneous: anything not immediately covered by the previous phases.

Any article within the scope of Majestic Titan should be marked by adding OMT=# to the {{WPMILHIST}} project banner at the top of its talk page (where "#" corresponds to the phase number; see the project banner instructions for more details on the exact syntax). This will automatically place it into Category:Operation Majestic Titan articles and allow automated progress measuring.

Note: This progress marks only Phase I. As other phases become active, the matrix will be adjusted accordingly.

InGreek mythology, the elder gods were the Titans. Twelve of these beings ruled over the golden age before they were overthrown by the Olympian gods at the end of a ten-year war. After the titans were defeated they met a variety of ends; most were cast out and imprisoned. A lucky few had the fortune to survive this fate, and would serve in limited capacities for the Olympian gods during their reign as the supreme beings. For all this though, the titans-although defeated-remained a force of contention, having left their mark on ancient Greek society and earning for themselves a place in the modern study of ancient history.

In much the same way these battleships also shared a similar story. Battleships were the titans of seaborne warfare in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century until their reign was savagely cut short by the rise of the aircraft carrier during the Second World War. Having established themselves as the new titans of seaborne warfare, these carriers banished the battleships first into reserve, then to the scrapyards, but a meager few managed to escape. Four were overhauled and served in the 1980s and 90s; only nine still exist today, all as floating museums.^[A] Although they no longer remain as a powerful force, battleships have certainly left their mark on the world, and still today inspire awe among the public.
