Edward Sylvester (Ed) Sorenson (24 September 1869 - 19 December 1939), was an Australian writer and poet.

From the age of nine he intermittently attended Casino South (Greenridge) Public School. Afterwards he worked at many rural occupations. At twenty he was a pioneer selector at Myrtle Creek. Later he carried a swag throughout Queensland, prospected for gold and continued with rural occupations on sheep-stations where he worked as a shearer, wool-classer, engine driver and book-keeper.

H. M. Green in his "An Outline of Australian Literature," (1930), said of Sorenson that he knewoutback life better than most.Certainly, few Australian authors, not even Henry Lawson or "Steele Rudd," had a more varied experience of bush-life than Sorenson. His output was prolific and it is said that he was, and remains, the most published Australian writer. The bibliography of his work, set out below, lists about 2,000 items: novels, serialised stories, short stories, articles and poems. The fact that most of his work appeared only in newspapers, almost certainly accounts for the fact that he has not gained a more significant place in Australian literature.

Digital copies of most of those newspapers are now avaiable at Trove, an initiative of the National Library of Australia. This means that most of the newspaper items referred to in this bibliography are available from Trove. One can retrieve items by searching The Trove newspaper databaseor magazine and newsletter database, as appropriate, using the reference provided in this bibliography for the desired item.

Further, the same item, or a similar item, often appeared in more than one newspaper. Where this has been noticed, it has been mentioned in the listing below, for the particular item.

Sorenson wrote using several names, as well as his own, signing his work as "E.S.S.," "Murrungurry," "Wandi," "Mulga," "Werrimee" and "Booraby, as well as at least one occurrence of "Old Hand". In this bibliography, the pen name is shown where it is used in newspaper items.

[Research for this short biography was obtained from Wikipeda and the  Australian Dictionary of Biography].

Compiler's Note

Details of Sorensons's work which is available from Project Gutenberg Australia are available from Sorenson's listing. A link is also provided in the bibliography where an item is available at PGA. However, where it is indicated in the bibliography that an item was published under one or more other titles, and no link is given that the item is available from Project Gutenberg Australia, refer to the other title(s) in case a link is given there.
