THE ACTION AS IT HAPPENED

RATER POLL: 57% of you think England can reach the semi-final. Either Portugal or Holland will have something to say about that in Gelshenkirchen on Saturday 1 July. The match will be live on BBC television, radio and broadband.

1800 BST: "Knowing we can do better and that we're in the quarter-final is very good. Now we have six days before the quarter-final. Every game is more and more difficult but I'm confident we'll improve and we have a good chance to go all the way."
Sven-Goran Eriksson

1759 BST: "It was an ugly performance but it's what we'd have taken before the game. We know we've got to improve but we're going through and we're very happy."
David Beckham

1758 BST: "The man of the match was Michael Carrick, who gave a cracking display of the holding role. Left foot, right foot, it was a masterclass of passing. And the energy levels of Wayne Rooney were amazing."
Alan Hansen BBC Sport TV

1757 BST: "A very proud day here. Half this crowd is leaving looking disconsolate, but the rest are celebrating an achievement nobody expected. There was stunned silence when England scored. After the first-half they thought they could do it."
Steve Kingstone, BBC Five Live in Quito, Ecuador

1755 BST "England fans stay in the ground to sing along to 'Three Lions'. And the Ecuador fans are joining in."
Chris Charles, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

PLAYER RATER: Ashley Cole takes the honours with a mark of 7.24, but overall the hard-working Carlos "Super Teno" Tenorio is your man of the match on 8.09.

1753 BST: England's fans are having a party in the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion. Next stop Gelshenkirchen with Portugal or Holland in wait.

"England are going through to the quarter-finals and quite honestly there's not a lot more you can say about this game."
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport

FULL-TIME: It wasn't the best of matches but as far as England are concerned the job is done.

90 + 3 mins: Ecuador pass the ball into touch and that will be that. England have a free-kick and are back down by the corner flag.

90 + 2 mins: Steven Gerrard makes way for Stewart Downing.

90 + 1 min: England kill time at the corner flag and win a free-kick before earning a corner. It is short again. They are playing out the clock as best they can.

89 mins: Wayne Rooney releases Aaron Lennon who is diligently marshalled to the byline by Ivan Hurtado. The England man wins a corner.

87 mins: Neicer Reasco races into the England area and pulls it back for Luis Valencia who slams a shot wide. Aaron Lennon replaces David Beckham and the captain's armband is handed to John Terry.

"England fans are already starting to celebrate a place in the last eight."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

85 mins: Paul Robinson's back on his feet and the time out gives England's players a chance to take on fluids.

83 mins: England are far from home and hosed. Neicer Reasco floats a cross over which evades all in white and yellow. There's an injury problem in goal though as Paul Robinson is down clutching his leg.

82 mins: Another England yellow card for time-wasting. Step forward Jamie Carragher.

81 mins: It is the Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard show again in attack but there is no end proiduct, something that is becoming far to familiar. Cristian Mora dives off his line to cut out the ball.

80 mins: Ulises De la Cruz is afforded far too much space on the right. His high, hanging cross is too deep.

78 mins: Sloppy England defending allows Edison Mendez a sight of goal. He fires wide. Paul Robinson is given a yellow card for delaying the goal-kick.

77 mins: A first change for England. Jamie Carragher replaces Joe Cole. The Liverpool man goes to right-back and Owen Hargreaves slots into a holding midfield role.

75 mins: England are finally playing at pace. The ball breaks for Wayne Rooney on the right. His shot takes a slight deflection off Neicer Reasco but is at a comfortable height for keeper Cristian Mora.

73 mins: Wayne Rooney leaves Ivan Hurtado for dead on the right flank. He bears down on goal and lays the ball back for Frank Lampard, but the combination again fails to come up trumps with Lampard blazing over.

72 mins: A second enforced change with Carlos Tenorio going off to be replaced by former Crystal Palace man Ivan Kaviedes. One of his nicknames is The Inseminator as it was claimed three women were once pregnant by him at the same time. His other nickname is El Nine - maybe we should stick with that.

71 mins: Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney again fail to link up. Lampard's pass across the back of the defence from the right is ahead of his team-mate.

69 mins: Carlos Tenorio - Super Teno - wins a free-kick deep by the corner flag. There are Tenorios all over the place. Edwin's going off to be replaced by Christian Lara who has been dubbed as Ecuador's version of Robinho. Carlos looks as if he's going off as well with an injury. Nothing comes from the free-kick.

66 mins: Ulises De La Cruz is booked. Just 24 hours after Olof Mellberg's Sweden were dumped out of the World Cup the Ecuadorian is 24 minutes away from joining his Aston Villa team-mate in being eliminated.

65 mins: Rio Ferdinand misses a cross from the right and Agustin Delgado lays it back to Luis Valencia who forces a good diving save from Paul Robinson.

64 mins: Frank Lampard races forward and unselfishly squares it to Wayne Rooney, but the pass is slightly mis-directed and the move breaks down.

63 mins: David Beckham looks as if he has been sick on the pitch. Hardly international football. Looks more like Big Dave down on Hackney Marshes after a heavy Saturday night.

61 mins: England's fans come alive but the goal is bad news for Peter Crouch who was set to come on. He remains rooted to the bench.

60 mins: GOAL England 1-0 Ecuador
England make the breakthrough and it is David Beckham. The skipper curls a free-kick over the wall from the left of the area and while keeper Cristian Mora gets his fingertips to the ball he is unable to keep it out at the right-hand post. Beckham becomes the first Englishman to score in three World Cups.

57 mins: Frank Lampard dinks a pass forward for Wayne Rooney but the England man is caught in an Ecuador sandwich and Geovanny Espinoza and Ivan Hurtado crowd him out.

"Peter Crouch and Stewart Downing have started warming up on the side of the pitch."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

56 mins: A corner to Ecuador. Edison Mendez scoops his effort deep, all the way across the penalty area and out for a throw.

54 mins: Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard get in the way of each other on the edge of the area and Ecuador break. Agustin Delgado blazes a wild cross behind the goal.

"It looks like Steven Gerrard has been detailed to give Joe Cole more help on England's left, prompting a couple of early threats. Sven-Goran Eriksson is likely to give this about another 15 minutes and if there is no improvement, surely he must consider the introduction of Aaron Lennon, who was so successful against Trinidad and Tobago, and possibly even Peter Crouch."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

53 mins: Wayne Rooney drifts out to the right but is surrounded by three men. There's no way through for him.

52 mins: Joe Cole barges into Ulises De la Cruz. The Aston Villa man stays down but there's none of this Fancy Dan rolling about. He reclines on his left side in conversation with Wayne Rooney as if he's on a sunlounger down at the hotel pool.

50 mins: That's better from England. Wayne Rooney flicks the ball off the outside of his boot to Steven Gerrard but nobody is up with play to get on the end of his cross from the left.

PLAYER RATER: The best England player on show? Ashley Cole according to you. Not surprisingly you rank him the 12th best player on the pitch.

47 mins: Ecuador resume the better and string a number of passes together before Edison Mendez finds himself in acres of space. His shot on goal is blocked.

1702 BST: Here we go again. England have shown time and again in recent outings that they are a first-half team. Ecuador have scored three of their five World Cup goals in the second half. Make of that what you will.

1700 BST: The teams are back out and there are no changes from either side.

"I'm very concerned by Wayne Rooney. He's been told to stay central but doesn't look happy. He needs someone to play off. On the evidence of this I'd re-introduce Peter Crouch and go back to a 4-4-2. He needs someone close to him. For Michael Carrick it's a case of 'fine son, but it's different than I expected' and bring on Crouch.

"It would be safe to say that opinion is unanimous in the media tribune that England's display so far ranks alongside their other poor showings in Germany. As someone remarked: "Imagine all those poor people at home, waiting for England v Ecuador to come on." Eriksson faces severe pressure to get things right at half-time. One indicator into his thoughts maybe that every substittue is out warming up on the pitch during the interval."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

RATER POLL: How should England change this. 46% of you think Aaron Lennon's the answer. Peter Crouch has 33% of the vote.

"The balance in the middle of the park is better with Michael Carrick in there, he's played some great balls forward. Basically it's been a mixed bag. You'd say usually the back four and keeper are a real strong point but they've looked shaky. What I want to see is how they get the best out of their best player, Wayne Rooney, because he's isolated at the moment.
Alan Hansen, BBC Sport TV

"John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are having the shakiest time together that we've seen. They've both made mistakes that could have led to goals. Michael Carrick finds himself free because there's nobody to mark. He has a lot of space and he's looking for the ball but for some reason they're not giving it to him, but I don't know if he's demanding it. Is it down to him or the team?"
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport

"It's been tough. They haven't been under that much pressure but they've caused their own problems. But we just haven't offered a threat going forward and they have to change that after the break."
Alan Shearer, BBC Sport TV

"I can remember one shot on target from Frank Lampard while Wayne Rooney huffed and puffed in attack. Ecuador look comfortable and secure and should be ahead."
Terry Butcher, Five Live Sport

"England supporters jeer off their team as the half-time whistle blows, and rightly so. England have posed little threat in attack and have looked uncertain at the back, John Terry in particular having an uncomfortable first 45 minutes. Sven-Goran Eriksson needs to do some fast talking otherwise he faces the prospect of his reign as coach ending at the hands of Ecuador."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

"The DJ poignantly plays 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' as the teams leave the field."
Chris Charles, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

HALF-TIME: The second-half can only be better. Half-time cup of tea? A medicinal whisky would be better after that.

45 + 2 mins: Sven-Goran Eriksson has a face like thunder on the bench. He is almost as red as his perma-tanned Ecuador rival, Luis Fernando Suarez.

45 mins: Yet more dodgy defending from England. Paul Robinson fails to shout for the ball and clatters into the back of Rio Ferdinand, while a subsequent corner is allowed to bounce in the box. Owen Hargreaves returns to the fray.

44 mins: Owen Hargreaves is writhing in agony just off the pitch after a challenge from Agustin Delgado.

43 mins: Michael Carrick floats a pass down the right channel to Wayne Rooney but he is unable to turn the ball on goal from an acute angle.

41 mins: The otherwise peerless Ivan Hurtado gifts possession to Wayne Rooney but he cannot get past Geovanny Espinoza. There's a hint of a handball in the Ecuadorian's sliding tackle but nothing is given.

40 mins: Another foul on Frank Lampard and another poor delivery from the free-kick by David Beckham. Beat the first man skip, don't hit him.

39 mins: With England at walking pace there is more movement in the crowd with a Mexican Wave doing the rounds.

"England's fans, so exuberant before kick-off, have been reduced to near-silence by yet another lifeless performance. It needs Michael Carrick to start dictating more and for Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to push on into more threatening positions."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

37 mins: Michael Carrick plays John Terry into danger with a heavy back pass. The Chelsea centre-back wins a free-kick after a challenge by Carlos Tenorio which earns a yellow card.

34 mins: Segundo Castillo clatters into Frank Lampard in the centre of the park and it is an England free-kick. The blue-booted David Beckham again complains about the proximity of the wall before firing in the ball just wide of Cristian Mora's right post.

32 mins: An Ecuador corner from the opposite side, the left. Michael Carrick's clearing header averts the danger for the time being.

30 mins: Ecuador have a free-kick deep by the corner flag in front of a splash of yellow-clad fans in the stand. Edison Mendez fails to beat the first man, David Beckham.

29 mins: Joe Cole looks to find Steven Gerrard but the ball forward from the left flank bounces off the midfielder's back on the edge of the area and is cleared.

28 mins: That's a bit better. Neat footwork from Joe Cole bamboozles Ulises De la Cruz before Steven Gerrard drills a pass forward which Wayne Rooney lays off to Frank Lampard. His final shot is comfortably saved.

26 mins: This is turgid stuff.

24 mins: Ecuador's Luis Valencia is booked for delaying David Beckham's free-kick. You'd have thought the extra time over the ball would have given the England skipper the opportunity to work out something better than a ball pumped out beyond a leaping Rio Ferdinand for a goal kick.

"Steve McClaren is animated on the edge of his technical area while coach Sven-Goran Eriksson appears content to let his right-hand man do all the talking."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

23 mins: A quarter of the game gone and England are still stalled in first gear. A second poor corner in quick succession does little to suggest they know how to find second at the moment.

22 mins: An elaborate free-kick is worked one way across the box and then back to the far post but Joe Cole fails to get a header on goal.

"It's the Ecuadorians making most of the noise in the stadium. England fans are understandably a little flat."
Chris Charles, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

20 mins: Edison Mendez's free-kick pierces a hole in the England wall and Agustin Delgado deflects the ball narrowly wide of Paul Robinson's right post.

19 mins: John Terry's struggling with his football in the opening stages so opts for a bit of kung-fu. A high kick on Carlos Tenorio which catches the striker's shoulder earns a yellow card.

18 mins: Frank Lampard lays a ball back to Steven Gerrard on the edge of the area and the Liverpool man picks his spot but his side-footed effort is over the bar.

16 mins: Ivan Hurtado is on his toes to stretch and intercept a threaded pass from Michael Carrick to his former West Ham team-mate Frank Lampard.

15 mins: A first England effort on target, but hardly one to test the tracksuited Cristian Mora in goal. Wayne Rooney's floated effort is met by the footballing equivalent of cricket's long barrier.

12 mins: England are flat-footed at a free-kick. The ball loops into Paul Robinson's grateful grasp and Carlos Tenorio is offside. A worrying defensive start for the Europeans.

"That chance prompted a long inquisition in the England defence with it seeming to centre on a breakdown in communication between John Terry and goalkeeper Paul Robinson."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

10 mins: Ecuador hit the bar. John Terry's defensive header under a long ball flies high off his head and Carlos Tenorio pounces on the loose ball. He runs through on goal but Ashley Cole comes from nowhere and his deflection is crucial in knocking the shot on to the woodwork.

9 mins: Showboating from Joe Cole. Far too early in the game and he loses possession. If Sven-Goran Eriksson was Jose Mourinho the diminuitive number 11 would be facing an early substitution.

6 mins: Wayne Rooney looks to get on the end of a deep pass over the top but Ulises De la Cruz comes across to clear.

4 mins: A lot of pundits said England should take a leaf out of Germany's book and start the match at a fast pace. They've ignored that and are going slow-slow-quick instead. Steven Gerrard injects some pace but Frank Lampard's pass is too heavy for Wayne Rooney.

2 mins: David Beckham's first free-kick is poor following a foul on Joe Cole, but England are maintaining possession.

1 min: The first positive sign for England doesn't come from any player but the sky. The sun goes behind a cloud. Maybe a good omen.

1600 BST: After Ecuador's lengthy pre-match huddle they get the ball rolling.

PRE-MATCH BUILD-UP

1559 BST: This is the biggest match in Ecuador's history. England hope it isn't even the biggest match of their week.

1557 BST: "England coaching staff run around the perimeter of the pitch before the kick-off, placing drinks along the touchline to help the players combat the heat."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

1556 BST: It is hand on heart stuff from the Ecuadorians for a stirring, instrumental anthem, with heavy brass interspersed with tootling flutes.

1555 BST: England show their now usual team unity at the anthem, lined up arm in arm with all of them belting out 'God Save the Queen' apart from Wayne Rooney.

1553 BST: The players emerge from the tunnel. England's last man out is Ashley Cole. The Arsenal man is winning his 50th cap.

1550 BST: It is the first time either team has played at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, but an Ecuadorian shaman visited in April to chase away evil spirits from all 12 venues. "I came to purify this important place for the World Cup and to bring positive energy," said Tzamarenda Naychapi.

1546 BST: None of the 46 players on show in these two squads were born the last time and only time these teams met. That was May 1970 when Francis Lee and Brian Kidd scored the goals in a 2-0 win.

1543 BST: "When it comes to the hullabaloo of a World Cup, John Terry and Paul Robinson are playing at their first. Once you get to the knockouts you're playing teams who will test you and they need to clear up any uncertainty at the back with a good positive attitude."
Terry Butcher, BBC Five Live Sport

1540 BST: A reminder of what's at stake. A place in the quarter-finals and a match against either Portugal or Holland in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.

1537 BST: Referee watch. Frank De Bleeckere has taken charge of two matches to date - Argentina v Ivory Coast and Japan v Croatia. The Belgian has handed out seven yellow cards.

1534 BST: "England players are warming up on the shaded side of the stadium, keeping well out of the sunshine. Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is on the touchline, deep in discussions with Sir Trevor Brooking and assistant manager Tord Grip. One disappointed figure looking on is Gary Neville, whose World Cup hopes are in the balance after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a calf strain."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

1532 BST: "Sven-Goran Eriksson always surprises us. Another day another system. Players like continuity so it could be a problem. England haven't got their balance between defence and attack yet. But having said all that, I think they're going to win the game."
Alan Hansen, BBC Sport TV

1526 BST: "There's a great atmosphere here high in the Andes. There are dogs wearing the yellow shirts of the national team, dozens of street vendors and roast pig heads everywhere. That would appear to be the dish of choice. Ecuador feel they have a very good chance. They don't think the England team have done well and one newspaper said England were jammed on the rails."
Steve Kingstone, BBC Five Live in Quito, Ecuador

1522 BST: What can we expect from Ecuador? A solid 4-4-2 based on width, pace and a high tempo. Famously they won 23 of their 28 qualifying points at home in Quito, the second-highest capital in the world at 2,800m. Stuttgart is a less lung-busting, vertiginous 250m above sea level.

1519 BST: "The wives and girlfriends of the England team - or WAGS as they have become known - have been attracting attention again inside the stadium. A huge group of photographers turned their lenses away from the pitch and towards the corner of the stands where they were sitting, presumably for yet another appearance in the tabloids."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

1516 BST: "England won't win the World Cup with their preferred 4-4-2 formation but they could with this. The formation for this game gives them more freedom to move away fluidly."
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport

1515 BST: "England supporters, having had to share the stadium with Sweden's fans in Cologne, easily outnumber their Ecuadorian counterparts. Temperatures inside the stadium have reached such a level that Fifa staff are waiting halfway up flights of stairs to hand out free refreshments for those fans making their way up to the upper reaches of the stadium."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

1514 BST: When Ecuador arrived in Germany for the World Cup there were sniffles and snuffles in the squad and moans and groans at the cool inclement weather. But today they can have no complaints with the thermometer touching 35C. Will England?

1509 BST: There are two Ecuador starters with Premiership experience. Ulises De la Cruz made four starts for Aston Villa last season, and then there is Agustin Delgado. He was at Southampton between July 2001 and November 2004, scoring two goals in 143 minutes. He has scored two goals in 173 minutes at this tournament to date.

1506 BST: Michael Carrick's promotion to the starting XI mean that only five England players are yet to appear at the tournament - Scott Carson, David James, Wayne Bridge, Jermaine Jenas and Theo Walcott. This will be Carrick's first competitive start.

1502 BST: "Fans from all nations are filing into the stadium side by side, including a large group of Poles, who obviously bought tickets in advance thinking they'd qualify for the knock-out stages. Whoops."
Chris Charles, BBC Sport in Stuttgart

1501 BST: "I can see why this side has been selected against South Americans, England are better when the ball is being moved quickly. In terms of the team itself the concerns I have are will we have anyone central when Wayne Rooney goes out to the flanks and does David Beckham have the pace to go forward and keep up with play?"
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport

1500 BST: The teams are in and there are no surprises from either side with the much-publicised predicted line-ups spot on.

TEAM LINE-UPS
