75 mins: England are finally playing at pace. The ball breaks for Wayne Rooney on the right. His shot takes a slight deflection off Neicer Reasco but is at a comfortable height for keeper Cristian Mora.

73 mins: Wayne Rooney leaves Ivan Hurtado for dead on the right flank. He bears down on goal and lays the ball back for Frank Lampard, but the combination again fails to come up trumps with Lampard blazing over.

72 mins: A second enforced change with Carlos Tenorio going off to be replaced by former Crystal Palace man Ivan Kaviedes. One of his nicknames is The Inseminator as it was claimed three women were once pregnant by him at the same time. His other nickname is El Nine - maybe we should stick with that.

71 mins: Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney again fail to link up. Lampard's pass across the back of the defence from the right is ahead of his team-mate.

69 mins: Carlos Tenorio - Super Teno - wins a free-kick deep by the corner flag. There are Tenorios all over the place. Edwin's going off to be replaced by Christian Lara who has been dubbed as Ecuador's version of Robinho. Carlos looks as if he's going off as well with an injury. Nothing comes from the free-kick.

66 mins: Ulises De La Cruz is booked. Just 24 hours after Olof Mellberg's Sweden were dumped out of the World Cup the Ecuadorian is 24 minutes away from joining his Aston Villa team-mate in being eliminated.

65 mins: Rio Ferdinand misses a cross from the right and Agustin Delgado lays it back to Luis Valencia who forces a good diving save from Paul Robinson.

64 mins: Frank Lampard races forward and unselfishly squares it to Wayne Rooney, but the pass is slightly mis-directed and the move breaks down.

63 mins: David Beckham looks as if he has been sick on the pitch. Hardly international football. Looks more like Big Dave down on Hackney Marshes after a heavy Saturday night.

61 mins: England's fans come alive but the goal is bad news for Peter Crouch who was set to come on. He remains rooted to the bench.

England make the breakthrough and it is David Beckham. The skipper curls a free-kick over the wall from the left of the area and while keeper Cristian Mora gets his fingertips to the ball he is unable to keep it out at the right-hand post. Beckham becomes the first Englishman to score in three World Cups.

57 mins: Frank Lampard dinks a pass forward for Wayne Rooney but the England man is caught in an Ecuador sandwich and Geovanny Espinoza and Ivan Hurtado crowd him out.

47 mins: Ecuador resume the better and string a number of passes together before Edison Mendez finds himself in acres of space. His shot on goal is blocked.

1702 BST: Here we go again. England have shown time and again in recent outings that they are a first-half team. Ecuador have scored three of their five World Cup goals in the second half. Make of that what you will.

1700 BST: The teams are back out and there are no changes from either side.

"I'm very concerned by Wayne Rooney. He's been told to stay central but doesn't look happy. He needs someone to play off. On the evidence of this I'd re-introduce Peter Crouch and go back to a 4-4-2. He needs someone close to him. For Michael Carrick it's a case of 'fine son, but it's different than I expected' and bring on Crouch.

"It would be safe to say that opinion is unanimous in the media tribune that England's display so far ranks alongside their other poor showings in Germany. As someone remarked: "Imagine all those poor people at home, waiting for England v Ecuador to come on." Eriksson faces severe pressure to get things right at half-time. 44 mins: Owen Hargreaves is writhing in agony just off the pitch after a challenge from Agustin Delgado.

43 mins: Michael Carrick floats a pass down the right channel to Wayne Rooney but he is unable to turn the ball on goal from an acute angle.

41 mins: The otherwise peerless Ivan Hurtado gifts possession to Wayne Rooney but he cannot get past Geovanny Espinoza. There's a hint of a handball in the Ecuadorian's sliding tackle but nothing is given.

32 mins: An Ecuador corner from the opposite side, the left. Michael Carrick's clearing header averts the danger for the time being.

30 mins: Ecuador have a free-kick deep by the corner flag in front of a splash of yellow-clad fans in the stand. Edison Mendez fails to beat the first man, David Beckham.

29 mins: Joe Cole looks to find Steven Gerrard but the ball forward from the left flank bounces off the midfielder's back on the edge of the area and is cleared.

28 mins: That's a bit better. Neat footwork from Joe Cole bamboozles Ulises De la Cruz before Steven Gerrard drills a pass forward which Wayne Rooney lays off to Frank Lampard. His final shot is comfortably saved.

26 mins: This is turgid stuff.

24 mins: Ecuador's Luis Valencia is booked for delaying David Beckham's free-kick. You'd have thought the extra time over the ball would have given the England skipper the opportunity to work out something better than a ball pumped out beyond a leaping Rio Ferdinand for a goal kick.

12 mins: England are flat-footed at a free-kick. The ball loops into Paul Robinson's grateful grasp and Carlos Tenorio is offside. A worrying defensive start for the Europeans.

10 mins: Ecuador hit the bar. John Terry's defensive header under a long ball flies high off his head and Carlos Tenorio pounces on the loose ball. He runs through on goal but Ashley Cole comes from nowhere and his deflection is crucial in knocking the shot on to the woodwork.

9 mins: Showboating from Joe Cole. Far too early in the game and he loses possession. If Sven-Goran Eriksson was Jose Mourinho the diminuitive number 11 would be facing an early substitution.

6 mins: Wayne Rooney looks to get on the end of a deep pass over the top but Ulises De la Cruz comes across to clear.

4 mins: A lot of pundits said England should take a leaf out of Germany's book and start the match at a fast pace. They've ignored that and are going slow-slow-quick instead. Steven Gerrard injects some pace but Frank Lampard's pass is too heavy for Wayne Rooney.

2 mins: David Beckham's first free-kick is poor following a foul on Joe Cole, but England are maintaining possession.

1 min: The first positive sign for England doesn't come from any player but the sky. The sun goes behind a cloud. Maybe a good omen.

1600 BST: After Ecuador's lengthy pre-match huddle they get the ball rolling.

1559 BST: This is the biggest match in Ecuador's history. England hope it isn't even the biggest match of their week.

1557 BST: "England coaching staff run around the perimeter of the pitch before the kick-off, placing drinks along the touchline to help the players combat the heat."

1555 BST: England show their now usual team unity at the anthem, lined up arm in arm with all of them belting out 'God Save the Queen' apart from Wayne Rooney.

1553 BST: The players emerge from the tunnel. England's last man out is Ashley Cole. The Arsenal man is winning his 50th cap.

1550 BST: It is the first time either team has played at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, but an Ecuadorian shaman visited in April to chase away evil spirits from all 12 venues. "I came to purify this important place for the World Cup and to bring positive energy," said Tzamarenda Naychapi.

1546 BST: None of the 46 players on show in these two squads were born the last time and only time these teams met. That was May 1970 when Francis Lee and Brian Kidd scored the goals in a 2-0 win.

1543 BST: "When it comes to the hullabaloo of a World Cup, John Terry and Paul Robinson are playing at their first. Once you get to the knockouts you're playing teams who will test you and they need to clear up any uncertainty at the back with a good positive attitude."

1519 BST: "The wives and girlfriends of the England team - or WAGS as they have become known - have been attracting attention again inside the stadium. A huge group of photographers turned their lenses away from the pitch and towards the corner of the stands where they were sitting, presumably for yet another appearance in the tabloids."

1514 BST: When Ecuador arrived in Germany for the World Cup there were sniffles and snuffles in the squad and moans and groans at the cool inclement weather. But today they can have no complaints with the thermometer touching 35C. Will England?

1509 BST: There are two Ecuador starters with Premiership experience. Ulises De la Cruz made four starts for Aston Villa last season, and then there is Agustin Delgado. He was at Southampton between July 2001 and November 2004, scoring two goals in 143 minutes. He has scored two goals in 173 minutes at this tournament to date.

1506 BST: Michael Carrick's promotion to the starting XI mean that only five England players are yet to appear at the tournament - Scott Carson, David James, Wayne Bridge, Jermaine Jenas and Theo Walcott. This will be Carrick's first competitive start.

1502 BST: "Fans from all nations are filing into the stadium side by side, including a large group of Poles, who obviously bought tickets in advance thinking they'd qualify for the knock-out stages. Whoops."
